light weight 9mm bullets?

Hi guys,

Would bullets in the 100 gr weight range for a 9mm be OK for target shooting at less than 50 ft.?

I just fired my first 90 gr Hornady XTP test loads this past weekend. Below is the spec's direct from Hornady.

Here is the load data requested:
HODGDON UNIVERSAL: Powder
9mm Luger min. charge of 4.5gr / max charge of 5.3gr
C.O.L. of 1.070”
Thank you for your interest in Hornady products.

Near zero recoil and cycled perfectly. The "Report" of the shot is noticably different than std factory ammo. Louder & different sounding pitch ??? That little bullet gets some good velocity coming out of the Barrel.

I will be loading more for plinking. Good luck

I loaded up some 90gr. XTPs with 4.7 grns. of Titegroup but haven't shot them yet. All this info sounds encouraging. Like a lot of people, I wanted to reload and that was all they had, so had to settle.

I grabbed a case of 100gr Hornady FMJ RN as that is all that was in stock at the time. They were more expensive than my 115gr Rainier FMJ RN I am currently cycling through, but reloading components are hard to come by so I grabbed these.

Range trails will tell if I don't sell them...lol.

Silver,

Hornady bullets are jacketed where as rainiers are plated. Jacketed bullets usually always cost more than plated ones.

Is there a benefit to plated over jacketed?

Cheaper... and slightly less resistance so you can use a smidge less charge to achieve a similar velocity

Range report

90gr Hornady XTP with 4.5 gr Univesial min. powder charge will not cycle my glock. 5.0 gr charge seems to be the ticket.

Just bought some 50 grain JHP today, haven't shot them but they sure are interesting to look at. It came with the Special Forces crest on the box so they must kill bad guys in one shot.

Sure shot....I noticed the difference, but just figured it was due to the brand name.

Just got a text from MidwayUSA and they have the Rainier FMJ RN in...I bought maximum amount allowed.

Silver, I absolutely love rainier bullets. I started using them 2 years ago and now it's all I compete with. For IDPA, shooting steel, and punching paper their great. Sure there might be one here and there that isn't sized right or the plating has some dimples but that's so few and far between I don't mind it. I will say that I really like Berrys as well. Comparing Berrys to rainier I think the quality is a touch better with Berrys but I get rainier cheaper so I usually always shoot rainier. You'll be very happy with rainier!
