bought a model 99 in 300 win(only see 300 mag) and would like a source for ammo and what grain bullet is best for deer...I currently use a 220 grain in a 30.06. Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays

If you bought a Savage 99 then it can only be a .30-30 Win, .300 Savage or a .308 Win if it is a .30 caliber. I'd go look at the rifle again and take a look at the stamp to make sure. You'll never get a .300 Magnum of any kind to feed through that rifle.

And you'll be better off with almost anything but the 220 gr bullets for deer. Something in a 150-165 gr would be a much better choice in any of those chamberings.

The savage model 99 was chambered in 300 savage. That is most likely what you have. Check the gun again. If I were you I would use 150 gr bullets.

I would also try 150 or 165 gr in the 30-06.

I don't know of a deer anywhere in the world that needs a 220 gr bullet from a 30-06. The 300 Savage with a 150 gr bullet will kill deer just fine, up to and including moose.

Id setup that 06 with a 150 and go with a 180 in the 300. 220 is way to heavy in those rifles for any type of long long shot. They are super slow, but they do hit hard but the lighter bullets I found work far superior to the heavier ones

Might want to flip that around on the bullet weights the 06 is much better at launching 180 grain bullets than the .300 Savage that his rifle is actually chambered in, not .300 Winchester.

There is nothing at all wrong with the 30 cal 220 gr bullet for short range hunting.

The bullet would actually be a good round to about 200 yards.

They wont come apart, yet they will penetrate quite well and do what damage is necessary. If you go to FMJ 220 Pills they well kill anything on this earth.

I've been playing with my 30-40 Krag and chose the 220 grn bullet @ 2000 FPS and my go to round. The sights of the Krag are designed for this round & velocity.

If sighted in for 175 yards, it will be 6 inches low at 225 and 3.6 inches high at 100 yards. Thats well within the 10-11 inch vital area of a deer size animal.

I just finished reading (again) Young's Book "Alaska-Yukon Trophy's Won and Lost.(great book by the way) where they hunted the Alaska Yukon area in the early 1900s. One of the hunters carried a 30-40 and was used to down bear when hunters with other rifles wounded the animals.

The 220 gr solids also were used sucessfully penitrating the thick skulls of elephants in the later haydays of ivory hunting.

220 gn bullets aren't long range target rounds, but are highly effective at short ranges on just about any medium or large game you choose to peruse.

So to the OP, if you like your 220 pills, and they work in your stile of hunting, then by all means use them.

I think you have touched upon why the 30-40 Krag has a reputation for killing power far beyond the paper ballistics. The bullet just doesn't stop, and is going to get through the vitals. Two drains are better than one on most critters, too.
