.25-06 loads & magnum primers
I have just stared working up .25-06 loads using 100gr Sierra SPBT. I have tried one load with 52gr IMR4350 (53.5 is max). It was as fast as it should be, but not as accurate as I would like. Anyone have any favorite loads they would like to share? I have on hand IMR4350, IMR7828, IMR4895, & H1000. Also, I would like some information regarding switching to magnum primers in this caliber. How much should I reduce the standard primer load? Anyone use magnum primers in the .25-06 with success?
Thanks, FIRE! |

I have loaded the 25-06 for over 30 someodd years and have never found the need for magnum primers. For years I used strictly H-4831 (the original surplus stuff) for everything from 87 grain to 120 grain with plenty of success.............maybe it is that I was just lucky and got a good rifle but all the reasonable loads shoot well less than 1". Now I use H-414 for 75 and 87 grain loads and H-870 for 120 grain loads (I don't load 100 grain), and the results are still fine.

I have loaded my 25-06 for about 2 years with IMR 4350. I use 52.0 grains of the powder for 100 grain Sierra Spitzers. I am getting a group of about 1/2"! Give it a shot!!!!

FIRE!,
If you're happy with the velocity of the load, try varying the seating depth and see if this tightens your groups. I've experimented just enough with the mag primers to find that it makes no difference in my particular loads, but YMMV as each rifle is different. If you're set on trying the mag primer I'd start fresh over at the low end of the book and work up carefully. Sub |

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm sure the 4350 load has potential since that is what I use with the 120s. Tweeking the seating depth will be next since I have only tried a couple of variations with powder type and charge.
Sub MOA, Do you have any favorite loads using the four powders I listed that you would like to share? |

Nope, sorry. The only powder you've got that I've used is the IMR 4350 and that was many moons ago. I don't even think I still have that load info. My recent loads have been with IMR4831, H4831SC, and Varget. Sub |

Two places to try...varminter.com and centerfirecentral.com.
At Varminter there are a couple of guys that are WAY hardcore on 25-06. Just do a search. One guy (Ledz) seems to be the 25-06 guru. Centerfire central has lots and lots of loads listed for just about anything. They WILL have your load. Personally, I'd try benchrest primers before magnums (unless its a powder that requires it). Added note..the new Handloader has a really extensive article on 25-06. Last edited by Redneck2; November 2, 2001 at 08:03 AM. |
