Coyotes

okay so here it is. me and my rommie were talking this morning, neither of us have done alot of hunting. (me pheasent once and him turtles at a farm) we live in nor-cal, were college students. we want to coyote hunt.
where is a good place to look into?
and
what gun?
I own a kel-tec su-16a in .223.
He owns a rem 700 .270, and a howa 1500 in 22-250, and a 20ga rem 870.
which would be best for pig as well?

Hey, I used to live in Redding, if you want hogs go out to cottonwood, find water, and start looking for sign. I saw a lot of coyotes when I lived there but I never got them to come in to a call. Farther north toward the Oregon border though there is more public land and the coyotes come within handshaking distance when you give a dying rabbit call. Good luck!

Kind of reminds me of the 2 young privates from Brooklyn that wanted to go hunting in Georgia.
They checked out rifles from the arms room for the weekend, bought hunting licenses and took to the field.
They came across some critters and could decide if they were legal to shoot, so they came back to the post and asked Top.
They told him that they were mostly white, but some were black, They all had snotty noses & dirty @holes.
Top told them they shouldn't shoot them, that they are Airborn Rangers!

That's enough of that, Gbro. Next thing, you'll be talking about the six-pointer you shot: Two up, and four down.

BAck to coyotes: Centerfire .22s aren't all that good for pigs, unless the shooter is really, really expert about shot placement. The .223 and .22-250 are just fine for coyotes.

The main thing for hunting coyotes is doing a search in this forum about the "how to". "Calling coyotes" might work; I haven't done a search for all that.

Like Art said, save the 223 and 22-250 for coyotes, use the 270 on pigs. In NCal, take a drive over to Alturas or down towards Williams and find some hay farmers (if there are any farmers left in CA) and ask to shoot their ground squirrels. You will definitely use that 22-250 a bit!

first of all thanks for all the help.
the two .22 calibers were purchased for squirrels, we do live in nut country around here. fuzzy little S.O.B's are everywhere. we were just wondering what else we could get with our investments.
would a .357 or a .44 lever do the job on either creature? is it even legal to hunt with a pistol caliber in CA?
