Reloading .338 lapua

Any of you guys is reloading .338 lapua magnum? I love shooting the thing but of course this is a very expensive hobby, and at the end I am stuck with a load of good quality norma brass(black hills 250 grain). If you do what kind of reloading equipment do you use and what powder? Thanks ,Cansniper

Reloadersnest, 338 Laupa Magnum data

From my observations (Never shot one) the Laupa does very well with very slow powders like Hodgdon H870 that you can buy surplus for $40 a keg. Simple reason being that huge case can hold a lot of it. Personaly I think the 338 Ultra Mag is a better round because it is supposed to place less stress on the reciever. I believe you're average reloading press will be able to handle the 338 Laupa.

Hello cansniper, Reloading for the .338 Lapua is no different than any other cartridge. Use good data and good proceedures and you will be fine.
I load for my .338 Lapua on a RCBS Rock Chucker press using RCBS dies.
I've loaded bullets from a Sierra 215 gr. SPBT using a mild load of H-4831 for sub MOA groups at 100 yds. to Sierra 300 gr. MKs using a stiff load of
IMR-4350 for very gratifying hits on target at over a mile. I have also used
IMR-7828 with very good results using Lapua and Sierra 250 gr. HPBTs.

Loading data can be found online at Lapua's web site , Accurate Reloading and Hogdon
Have fun but be safe!

HankL,
Good to hear some one else is hand loading and shooting a .338 LM . I'm using Lapua brass, 215M primers, and Sierra MK HPBT bullets in both 250 gr and 300gr. What is the best way to select the best powder? I've read guys using VV N170, VV N560, RL25, Retumbo, H1000 and your IMR -4350 and IMR-7828 to push 250 and 300 gr bullets . How does one decide?

Between myself and a couple other local 338 Lapua shooters, we have several loads that shoot very well. Most of these loads come from development in my AI-AWSM, and a TRG-42.

Lapua cases, Federal 215M primers

Lapua 250gr Scenar:
- H4831SC: start at 88gr, my load is 90.5gr
- Retumbo: start at 92gr, my load is 96.0gr
- RL25: start at 92.0gr, my load is 94.0gr
- N170: start at 95.0gr, my load is 98.0gr
- N560: start at 86gr, my load is 89.0gr
- H1000: start at 92.0gr, my load is 94.0gr -- We got poor results with H1000 at 1000 yards in both the TRG-42 and my AI.

Of those, I have shot the most of the Retumbo and H4831SC loads, and they perform well to at least 1520 yards.

Sierra 300gr SMK:
RL25: start at 87.0gr, my load is 91.5gr
Retumbo: start at 90.0gr, my load is 93.0gr

From the 250 Scenars, you can expect 2900-3000fps from a 27" barrel. For the 300's, 2700-2750.

I'm using 92.5gr/H1000 under the 250gr Lapua Lockbase.

CCI Magnum primers and Lapua once fired brass.

I've only gone out to 400yds at this time, but come Spring it will be 600yds then 1000 meters.

Cansniper:

we are neighbours (Renfrew).

Are you on CGN?

Are you going to Listowel on April 25-26?
