To carry five or six
I was wondering how everyone felt about the cutout in between the chambers and if you use it or just load five.

You talking about an 1858 Remington-style revolver?
On my Pietta .31 caliber Pocket Remington there's no question, because the safety notches don't work. The pocket model's a five-shooter too, so leaving one chamber unloaded means only FOUR shots. But that doesn't bother me too much, since a .31 cap and ball is not exactly my first choice for self-defense. I used to have Colt replicas that had a "safety pin" between the chambers. That thing looked awfully weak. I didn't trust it and never used it, except to try it a couple of times with an unloaded revolver to see how it worked. |

If you're talking about a Ruger Old Army, then go right ahead. The interchamber notches on a ROA are strong enough for their intended purpose.

On my Ruger Old Army I load 5 only for hunting. At the range I load 6.

1860 and 1858
My 1860 and 1858 both have the "between chambers" provision and I would feel perfectly safe carrying either with 6 chambers loaded.
Especially since I have flap holsters for them. |
