Jim Watson, I agree.. there is no real good reason to push your 45/70 anymore than needed or wanted.

I am just glad Hodgdon will still take time to answer questions like these.

So if anyone has concerns with any powders... try e-mailing the manufacturer... Hodgdons response was quite prompt.

MY powder manufacturer for such as the Trapdoor - actually I don't have a Trapdoor but do have a Jap Browning fako "Highwall" and a real Winchester Single Shot - is in Switzerland.
Because I only shoot black in them.

That really interesting. Thanks for taking the time to write bfoosh! Having run some loads at this point, I'm happy with the Lyman load data. I got consistent results with loads ranging from 37.5 to 39.5 grains. At the short distance at which I normally shoot, the Hodgdon data would print soooo high that it would probably be unusable with regular sights.

I have an original 1873 Springfield trapdoor rifle (long barrel). Years ago I loaded some 3031 using the Ken Waters book. Lead bullets only and very low pressure. I believe I only got 1300 fps. Use the tier 1 load data and keep velocity low. This is soft metal and will not stand any stronger loads. The condition of the metal and action are very important.

I use the tier II load data for my Marlin 1895 lever action with 300 JHP for walking thru heavily wooded or thick brush while deer hunting.
