870 Disassembly Questions

How does one get the magazine extension off the darn shotgun? Have an 870 Express Magnum, shoots real nice, just wish I could shoot it more often.

Would like to possibly put a different barrel on it. Currently has a 20" w/ adjustable sights. I need something brighter, was thinking the light gathering optics. Is there a particular barrel that would except sights easily?

Has the synthetic stock. Would like to put a soft cheek piece and pad on it. Would also like a good sling. Any recommendations.

The mag extension should just unscrew. If you have a barrel clamp, you'll have to take that off (or at least loosen it) first.
It have a 20" rifle-sighted barrel and factory mag extension on my Express. I have Ashley standard dot sights on it and I like them very much.
Williams makes a fiber optic sight ("Firesight") that will fit your 20" barrel.
As far as barrels that accept sights, you've already got the best barrel for that.

Try a $2 bottle of Testor's Enamel in Bright Yellow for touching up the sights,KAM. If you do not like the results, a bit of acetone will take it off.

There's lots of old stuff on pads, check the archives.

Cheek Eez pads are sticky on one side, made of neoprene or similiar and you just stick them on the comb. Get the 1/16" for padding,more may shift your POI adversely.

As for slings, myriads of choices. I like a military style myself, but the guys with the black BDUs go for the tactical slings.

Thanks, I'm impressed as usual, at the directness of peoples advice.

Anybody know of a good place to shoot in Indiana. Any idea what a good course of fire would be. Start with home defense, then to scavanging/hunting.

Any hobby shop in the country should have testor's paint, as do many x-marts, toys-r-us stores, etc.

If you can't find that, a suitably hideous shade of nail polish will also work.

Can't help you with where to shot, but there's stuff in the Archives on COFs. Also, even the clay games help familiarization and handling skills. IOW, a round or two of trap will help you become better at "Serious" shotgunning.
