With good loads what is reasonable, M14/M1A accuracy and performance
Based on actual competitive range performance and tests . . . What can be realistically expected of an accurized M14/M1A?
Yes, using tweaked loads and that rare guy that can actually outshoot the rifle (machine rest). For instance: "If you have the money, they can be made to shoot 0.375 MOA without a problem. But you should realistically expect 0.50 MOA." Please guys - no "Blue Sky" |

My Nm M14 Rifle Will Put Ten Shots In An Inch At 100 Yards.
That's good enough for me.

50 shots, 100 yards, off the bench, m1a Supermatch as shown. 50 shots, 100 yards, off the bench, m1a Nationalmatch as shown. I do better with the scope then open sights, so don't blame the NM for the spread that was me.

The top one is my SuperMatch with a Brookfield scope mount and a 6x springfield freebee scope. I had a vari-xIII 6.5-20 on it, but it was just to much scope for the gun.
The bottom one is my NationalMatch. It is essentially stock and has never been scoped. Both were shot at 100 yards, off the bench just like this: What I am showing is my brass catcher setup with is just a cloth laundry bag and a bent wire. It works well. The load is also very standardized: Federal Gold medal brass trimmed to 2.005 C-34 primers Seirra 168 BTHP 40.5 grns of IMR 4895 (each charge induvidually weighted). The only special techniques I use for loading are a single stage press, small base dies, clean the primer pocket every time, trim the case every time, and precision seating dies. No special crimp is applied. When the brass was new, I trimmed, weighted and sorted the most consistent brass, cleaned the flash holes and uniformed the case necks. Hope that helps.

I had a Peerless Grade M1A from Fulton Armory. That gun with M852 would do with open sights at 200 would shoot tight knots. I did not have scope mount, but prone from sandbags at 200 it was less then 2". I had a hand load of 41.5gr IMR 4895/WLR/168SMK/LC Match Brass that shot just as good! I was so happy with that gun, and it allowed me clean 300 more then one string! I just would always seem to blow a few out the side on the 2nd string!
