.41 Mag Reloads
So I decided to get that .41 mag after all. Do any of y'all load any .41 "special" loads and if so what powder?

I have been loading the 41mag with 195 - 210 gr SWCs for over 30 years. Tried most powders and always went back to 2400. I may not get the max FPS and ME as with some of the other powders, but my groups on paper are very tight.

I'm using 210 grain cast bullets, full-length .41 Magnum brass, and 9.0 grains of Rex-3 powder. Not sure if that's a "magnum" load or a "special", but I like it.

4.5 grains of Titegroup and a 215 grain cast SWC make a good plinkin load in my Blackhawk. Supposed to be about 880 fps out of my 6.5" barrel, is accurate, and has minimal recoil.

Now we're talking. I have a lot of TG. Do you use a regular large pistol primer or a large magnum primer?

All the load manuals that I have seen that list Titegroup for the .41 mag, state 6.5 grains as the starting load. I did some searching on the web for ".41 Special" load data, and found several shooters using this load (the 4.5 grains). It works well for me, but it isn't a published, verified load, just one I found on another board, so you may want to start at the 6.5 grains and work down, just to be on the safe side.

My favorite "plinking" load for the .41 is 5.0-6.0/Bullseye, 6.0/WW231, or 7.0/700X behind a Lyman 410639, which is a TC 170gr. Mine has had the BB removed. I cast them from WW+2%. The velocity is 850-1000fps.
I used a bunch of them thru my 8 3/8" 'til I sold it, but my 6" S&W likes it as does my M58 4", and my RBH 4 5/8". Another fun load is the same powder charge behind an RCBS 41210KT at 210gr from WW+2% or 200gr when HPd. Velocity is from 800-950fps. These powders are easy to ignite so any standard primer will work just fine. Have fun, Gene |

I guess I should also state that I have a 2.5" barreled S&W scandium night guard that I'll be shooting these out of.

Whoops...the devil is in the details!
Red Dot...great stuff. This situation would be perfect with RD. Any of the shotshell powders around that end of the scale would be perfect, but now I'd really push for the 170gr bullet. The lighter, the less recoil. Have fun, Gene |

I'm not asking only for low powered loads here gents. Just what you do use. I gave the barrel length because I'm looking to maximize velocity.
FWIW I have only shot Win 175 gr Silvertips out of it. I do not find this load uncomfortable or hard to control. I'm glad someone is using Titegroup because I use that to load my 9mm and .45 as well. Thanks.

I'm shooting a Ruger Blackhawk and a Marlin levergun in 41 mag.
For the Ruger, I load lots of bullet weights but the power is always the same....H110. I use Winchester Large Pistol Primers and have never had any problems. For the Marlin, I load hunting rounds based on the Sierra manual. They have a specific page for their 170 Gr and 210 Gr JHC for the Marlin carbine. Have fun! The .41 Mag is an under-appreciated round that deserves more attention.

If you have any buddies that reload shotgun shells, bum a quarter pound of Red Dot or Promo from them and try it. I really think you'll like it. You can load it up or down quite a bit -- although if you go too high the recoil will get unpleasant really fast, totally out of proportion to the ballistics. (that means it's time to switch to a slower powder, like Unique or Universal, or Green Dot if you're almost where you want it)

I load and shoot a whole lot of .41 mag from a Ruger Blackhawk.
Load 1. Target, plinking, and steel knock down targets at 15 to 25 yards. Bullet is a 210 grain LSWC home cast Lee Tumble lube style. Powder is Trail Boss about 4.5 grains Recoil is very mild, shoots flat and POI lines up with POA well to 25 yards. Load 2 Targets to about 50 yards. Bullet is the same home cast LSWC as load 1 Powder is Acurate #9 15.0 grains to 15.2 grains. Gets me around the 1100 FPS range. Burns real clean and leaves little if any lead. Acurate enough to hit 2 liter bottles of water out to 50 yards. Recoil is not that bad. Less than you would think. Quite fun to shoot. A real loud boom, not much flash, and acurate enough to hit with it. Load 3 Bullet is a 210 grain Remington Jacketed soft point Powder is AA #9 about 17 grains it gets me around the mid 1200 fps range Max listed load is 17.7 with a start listed at 15.9 Recoil is noticiable with this load, as well as make sure you have very good hearing protection. Very little muzzle flash, and a very clean burning load. This is my prefered load for hunting hogs. I replaced H-110 with it and while it does not get the velocites of H-110 the many dead massive fat hogs that took thier last steps before being hit with it would not be able to tell you the differance. Load 4 Bullet is the same JSP as listed above Powder is H-110 21.0 grains Gets me somewhere in the 1400 FPS range. Start load is listed at 20.5 grains. Do not reduce below this charge. You chance a squib from unburned powder, or very eratick pressure if you do. Max load is listed as 21.5 grains. Recoil with this load is pretty stout. While tolerable it is signifigant. It booms like tunder, and makes one heck of a light show. Not for the faint of heart. Though this load will drop most any critter south of the Mason Dixon Line with a properly placed shot without fail. This was my original go to load for hog hunting.
