What brass do you reload for hunting?

Remington, but I would choose norma if funds were more abundant.

I'd also smoke better cigars and drink nothing but guiness and 12 year old single malt. That is how I view normal and lapua. far above the competition, but somthing I can do without.

I tend to shoot the less expensive brass (Winchester or Remington) for hunting just in case I am unable to recover it.

Winchester, R-P, Federal, whatever is on hand, I adjust my load up or down depending on the weight of the cases. I prefer R-P, best of all I have nothing in it except my labor, I purchased 84K cases and sold them until I recovered my money. What I have left is what I am using, I like to save money where I can and still shoot all I want to! William

I see several fellows mention Norma brass, I tried Norma 30-35 years ago (30/06) even back then it was expensive. As I recall they came in 20 round boxes and ready to load, they did save me the prepping but over all I didn't think the extra money was well spent.. IMO William

Remington, Federal, Blazer, Winchester, Norma, Speer, PMP, PUP, CMC, LC, Hornaday, RWS, that Russian stuff with stars, etc., etc.; however, I'm wondering if you were meaning to include pistol brass in your opening post as you didn't give specific parameters on what was being hunted - deer? elk? beaver? bull? bear? badger? snake? rabbit? racoon?

I usualy do not hunt with brass. I hunt for brass.

One of my trips to the range the range manager told me to make sure I leave the bucket, becasue there was still a lot on the ground.

The rifle range buckets were overflowing badly too.

The thing with Norma brass, is you are paying for virtually identical pieces of brass. They are all the same length, all the same weight, all the same internal capacity.

If you wanted that out of R-P or Win brass, you would have to buy 100 and then prep them all and sort them and *may end up with 20 identical pieces.

Buy 100 Norma and all 100 are identical.

So yeah, if you are just throwing rounds together to get minute of deer sized groups, not worth it.

If you are after teeny tiny groups at extended ranges, they are well worth it IMO.

I am aware of all the points you have covered, I separated 2K rounds of virgin R-P 22/250 brass into lots of + or - .5 gr, the rifle is a Winchester Featherweight Model 70 that is capable of 1/2 - 3/4" groups and that is about as good as I can shoot any more. With that said I will see 70 next summer so I have no illusions about my ability as a rifleman any longer. The older I get the less I like it, the alternative isn't appealing either. Now what I do is for pleasure, it pleases me to do the things I do (prep my own cases) to satisfy myself they have been done correctly. While I can't shoot one hole groups (I did have one Winchester Model 70 in 243 that would shoot 1/4"-1/2") I think the ammunition I put together is capable of it. William

For my 45LC: Starline

I don't consider Norma brass to be particularly expensive. Yes, it costs more than most other brands but that doesn't mean it's "expensive". I bought 100 pieces of 7-08 Norma brass like a year and a half ago and I still have all but about 5 pieces in use (I ruined the others in die/trim/sizing mistakes) So, I paid about 85 cents a piece and they've lasted me 18 months and counting. That's not "expensive" in my book. I've spent far more than that on gas getting to and from the range.

Down here there are no options. I have some Win. in 44-40 and Magtec for .357. Then there is whatever I find for .38 Special mostly Win & Aguila.

Brass off the range mostly. Secondary, I use Starline mostly for 357 Mag, those suckers are getting hard to find, or some once fired brass available on the net.

Lapua for my LR, LC and range brass for my 223, range brass for my pistols. About ready to break down and buy some Lapua for my .223, their .308 Palma brass is outstanding.

As to brass, I have a choice, new, fired, different brands, head stamps, years, foreign, domestic/commercial, my favorite is new unfired, next is once fired, that would be once fired in a trashy old chamber, for most moving the shoulder out requires fire forming, with cases that have been fired in a trashy old chamber, the shoulder has been moved out by someone else. For everything else there are forming dies, and the companion tool tool to the press,the feeler gage.

I've used a lot of Winchester brass for rifle reloading over the years, I don't think you'll be unhappy with it. Do inspect each case as I have seen some rejects in my bags lately!

What do should you do/do you do with new brass? Just check for cracks and damage to case/primer pocket along with lenth or is there anything else I am missing in that checklist

That said, the .44Spec is right up their too... but the .45 Colt is still the king.
