Pump Action

I'm relativly new into the gun world. I just got my first gun ( Ruger 10/22 ) about a month or so ago and last week I got a H&R 20 Gauge single shot for a sweet deal. I am already addicted . I've decided the next gun I want to get is a 12 Gauge pump action for home defense. Mossburg 500 or Remington 870 ?

Short answer, whichever one you like best

Shoot both of them and then buy the one you like. As my friend, 1-oz, said: Ford or Chevy. Some folks like Fords and others like Chevies.

The Archives here have oodles of stuff on this. Probably more than any other subject, in fact.

I like 870s better, but both are excellent pumps. Get the one that FEELS best....

Welcome. Don't worry something else would spark that perennial debate. Before you buy, look around at other makers as well: Beretta; Savage; H&R (Harrigan and Richardson or something - shotguns aren't my forte')

But the advice of shoot both if you can is excellent. At worst try them both out at the store. Both are good shotgun types with good price points, so find the one that fits you the best.

I have an 870 and two of the 500. I like the 870 better. But the 500 can often be found for a lower price.

a lot of the debate is subjective, but here are a few of the basic differences:

- the 870 has its safety located on the trigger guard (similar to the 10/22). The 500's safety is on the top of the gun at the rear of the receiver. As a lefty, I prefer the 500's safety location as it is more ambidextrous, but that is mostly a matter of personal preference.

- standard 870s have 5-shot capacity. Standard 500s have 6-shot capacity. Probably not a big consideration, but some people prefer more capacity for defense weapons.

- The guns weigh about the same, but I believe the 870 has a steel receiver while the 500 receiver is made of aluminum. As a result, the 870 may be slightly more "center heavy" which is generally considered a good thing in wingshooting. May not be relevant for defense.

- 500s are a bit cheaper and extra barrels are significantly cheaper if you, for example, wanted a short barrel for defense, a long barrel for clay targets and hunting, and a slug barrel for deer. Also, 500's come with three choke tubes. 870s come with one (buying extra's will be about $15 on the low end). That said, the difference in cost won't seem like much down the road if you really like the 870 better.

I found the Weatherby to have a better quality feel to it than any other gun around the $300 price mark.

I just got a Mossberg 500 new for $227 and so far so good shooting skeet. I used the search function here and learned A LOT. Personally I like the safety on the 500 and the lighter weight and cheaper price.

Id also look into a Benelli (Super)Nova. A bit more money but I have had bad experiences with Remington and Mossberg. My Supernova is my favorite gun and it works perfect
