powder for 410?
What powder do you use for 410 shotshells? Alliant has a new powder called 410. What did they recommend before that? I would think a magnum pistol powder like herco or blue dot would work, or maybe H4227, and I have plenty on hand, but I can't see ordering a pound of 410 over the internet, 'cause it would last me 20 years the amount of time I spend shooting a 410.

I don't load 410 but it uses powders in the range of 2400, Lil'gun, etc. Other than skeet shooters, I suspect most folks are in the same "it would never be worth it" catagory when it comes to 410.

In the past I've used 2400 but I no longer reload 410. Believe I've seen data for 296/H-110 as well. I reloaded the 2.5 inch skeet shells. I prefer the flexibility of 2400 over 296. Lil Gun could be another choice. BTW, over the years, I've concluded that I don't need dozens of powders sitting around and am in the process of reducing the varieties on hand. Interestingly, I started off with Unique and 2400 and am going back in that direction, with maybe switching Universal for the Unique.

4227 is a standard powder for the .410. I believe Blue Dot to be too fast.
I've seen data for AA-9/WC 820 which might interest volume shooters. It uses fairly small charges and is only about $10 a pound in bulk. |
