Approx. how many semi-auto rds. could last you five years?

Using a primary Centerfire 'plinking' gun such as the SKS, AR etc as a single example, possibly 2,000, or something closer to 6,000?

I usually shoot about 1,600-1,700 rounds a year through my semis. I hit the range twice a month, 9 months out of the year, and usually bring 90 rounds with me when I go. So 8,000 would last me roughly 5 years.

I handload, so it is a lot easier and cheaper to burn through that much ammo.

That all depends on the years.

A rough average for me for 5 yeas would be 7000 rounds of 5.56mm and 3000 rounds of 9mm.

When I was trying to be serious about competition, I would have needed about 15,000 rounds of 9mm to last 5 years.

I probably shoot less than 1000 out of my semis in a year, but I shoot handguns way more than rifles, so my number is a bit skewed. If I were to shoot my rifles as much as my handguns, I'd need somewhere around 3000 a year.

Before the ammo shortage I would shoot probably around 1500+ rounds per year of 9mm with maybe 200-300 rounds of 380.

I am hesitant to own any semi-auto rifles mainly because of the ammo consumption. However .223 and 7.62x39 is about half the cost of .308 so I guess it wouldn't matter. I am a bolt gun guy and go through about 6,000 rounds a year shooting twice a week.

So for me five years would be 30,000 rounds of .308

5.56 I would say 2500 and most reloads.
30-06 5000 again most reloads.
7.6X39, 3000 all steel case Russian
22 LR. Right now I have 7,000 I hope that lasts me more than 5 years.

inbetween 3,000 and 7,000. If i knew i had a finite amount for that time, i could easily stretch 2,000.

Right now ..... maybe 50 rounds.

Back when I was shooting regularly.... I could probably get by with 4k per year. But, there were several years where I burned through my supply and another 6-7k rounds in just the SKS.
So, 20k minimum - 35k to be safe?

This must be a quantity vs quality issue. At my age and that I have to drive an hour and a half to just get to a rifle range, I shoot 50 rounds of 243, 125 rounds of 223 and another 50 rounds of whatever other rifle I bring with about 5 times a year (now down to 3 times a year). (7.62x39 or 270 or 35 Remington) So 6,000 rounds should last me for 5 years.

Since the range is only open 4 hours a day (12 noon to 4:00 pm) that would be about all I would use. Now if I didn't give a rat's behind about accuracy I could probable burn off twice that amount. (more than one round every 60 seconds just doesn't help my shooting ability.)

Now in IDPA matches I burn about 150 rounds of 9 mm over a 3 to 4 hour period 6 times a year, so that comes out to 900 rounds per year or 4,500 rounds over 5 years.

Jim

Thousands. Probably well over 10,000.

Maybe 3/4 pistol and 1/4 rifle or so.

Every pistol match is around 300 rounds if you count 22.

Each highpower match is 35-88 rounds plus load development and practice.

Maybe 100 rounds every casual range trip.

It all adds up.

Thank god for dry fire practice.

J.
