Ares SCR

As these are now shipping I am curious if anyone has any issues with any draconian jurisdictions.

I have a pal with one shipping to one of the worst jurisdictions and will update if there are any issues.

The only actual problem jurisdiction under current law might be Ct. but who knows how the "assault rifle" ban states will react. Even seems totally legal in DC (although some model mini-14s are legal there anyway).

I'm going to say that all of said gun ban states minus ct would be ok with it and that's only because CT is the only one(besides chicago) that specifically bans guns by model.

I'd love to hear some experiences with these (there's only one on GB for like 800$ now, so I assume they are near shipping, but not there yet). Supposedly they are upper-independent, but I'd like to get some verification of that. I think an SCR with an AR57 upper would nearly be a PS90 killer

Those fools really need to forget selling complete rifles and focus on pushing out SCR lowers. Their customers already own and want AR15's for their modularity, so why complicate everything by forcing them to buy an upper many in the ban states already have, or have access to. The lower is the part that's subject to all the bans and nonsense, so it is the service/good they are really offering; not the rifle itself.

uppers still have to deal with muzzle devices, barrel lengths, forward pistol grips ETC... all those scarey features.

not everyone can get an incomplete firearm registered.

DC bans certain long guns by model, and controls the rest by attribute. But the SCR is does not have the banned attribute combinations and it is not on the list of banned models. the handgun list can be revised by the police chief quickly. but I believe the long gun list comes right from the city code and requires council action with comment period etc.

What I was referring to is unique language in the ct law not by model but by attribute (location of the action above the hand) which may or many not be an issue.

Got One!

I saw that Midwest Gunworks would be selling them so I signed up for an email notification when they were in stock. I purchased the SCR Sporter last Friday and just brought it home last night.

Sorry; I haven't had time to shoot it yet. I did pull it apart real quick and what I saw had me scratchin my head It looks like any AR15 upper would fit on the lower as the pivot and takedown pins line up. But, the SCR has an unusual bolt/buffer system that travels down the handle of the rifle. Not sure how this thing will work? I need to read the manual and I'll try and get some pictures because it is difficult to explain.

My first impressions are that it is well made and will be fun rifle to shoot; much like the Ruger Mini... only I hope a lot more accurate.

Ares SCR Sporter

The Ares SCR Sporter

Purchased mine from Midwest Gunworks on 8/15/2014 Price: $866.00 delivered.

The SCR stands for Sport Configurable Rifle and is a 5.56/223 NATO caliber. The carbine model has a 16.25" 4140 Cromolly black anodized barrel with a 1 in 9 twist. The barrel does not appear to be chrome lined and has a standard (non-threaded) crown. My rifle came with a Magpul two-piece hand guard and synthetic stock and I believe this is the only current option. The rifle ships with one five-round magazine but is said to accept any AR15/16 magazine. The mag release button is located about two-inches forward of the trigger guard. A push-button safety is located on the rear of the trigger guard. The rifle weighs in at 5.7 pounds.

Field stripping the rifle involves pressing the usual takedown and pivot pins. The Charging Handle is standard. The Bolt Carrier Group is unique because of a slightly curved four-inch Strut protuding from the back of the assembly. This Strut is allowed to rotate up and down on the Firing Pin Retainer, (which in this case, is also called the Strut Axis). This Bolt Carrier Strut mates with the firing pin on top and the Recoil Spring Plunger below which is located in the handle of the stock.

You can be sure this rifle was made in America because the first five pages of the Owners Manual appear to be written by a lawyer in an attempt to absolve the company of any litigation. The rest of the manual covers basic field stripping, cleaning, troubleshooting and safety. What I found somewhat ominous was that the last page of the Owners Manual is dedicated to explaining why no warranty is offered with this product. You are however, left somewhat comforted by the last sentence stating that Ares Defense Systems has a continued interest in providing service to its customers. I couldn't help but think, with all the people and politicians currently against firearms in America, It takes a bold company to bet their existance on a new product. Especially with our 2nd Ammedment rights on the brink of extinction in some states. On the other hand, it also takes a bold customer to purchase a firearm that has no pevious history or product reviews. I hope it all works out for us both.

Thanks. any word when Ares will put the manual on its website?

My "friend" has delivered to his FFL from bhpolice for $799 plus $30 shipping but is in a 10 day waiting period jurisdiction and will pick it up this coming week.

As far as no warranty and no meaningful reviews, yes that is a risk. On the other hand between California, NY, Maryland, Ct etc having bans, this means about 1/3(?) of the US population is now under MSR limits and the growth in this area is likely to be significant

I sent an email to the company sales department last week but have not received a reply. I got the feeling they were in a hurry to get these rifles on the market and that they will worry about forming a support system later. At least I hope they have plans to set up a support system.

I called in on Friday on manual issue and they told me they were putting a product support page with manual up over the weekend. It is still not there.

On the no warranty, as the manual notes they have elected not to include an explicit warranty card, but under most state laws there is an implied warranty that would cover manufacture issues out of the box. In other words you have some protection against gross issues but this is likely not going to be ruger or sig warranty coverage

The unit I am looking at has a serial between 200 and 220.

It comes with a hard case, a cable lock, a manual, a five round magazine and an ares defense sticker. It has no iron sights. No forward assist.

It would be interesting for any users to report on magazines. It takes an AR-15 magazine but the magazine well seems a bit shallower than typical AR-15. I have a couple of brands of 10-round on order.

There are no iron sights, no front sight. It would be interesting to record here also what sight/optic/etc configurations people are trying/using

The bolt carrier is proprietary. It's like an AR-15 carrier with the rear portion cut off like some of the folding stock ARs have and has a sort of "rat tail" at the rear which engages a recoil spring inside the grip of the stock. If you've ever taken apart a semi-auto shotgun, you should be familiar with it.

It does however use standard AR bolts. So you can still do conversions to most any cartridge that a standard AR can take. As long as the bolt carrier don't need messin with.

I'd like to know if pistol caliber conversions typically involve the bolt carrier or just the bolt? This thing in 9mm or .357SIG would be a sweet piece.

I've seen vids and pictures with the SCR fitted with 30 round mags. Really no reason why not. The length of the mag well doesn't matter. As long as the mag release and bolt catch are where they gotta be, everything below them is just unnecessary metal.

Mm really looking forward to getting one. Replace the upper with a DPMS low profile upper (no forward assist, brass deflector, or dust cover) and put some wood furniture and low profile iron sights on it. Make a sort of light, handy, rifle.

Only question is; 7.62x39 or 5.56x45?

Ares needs to get to work on a .308 model that takes AR10 uppers.

Legal in NYC?

Has anybody checked on the legality of this rifle in NYC? I suspect the City will consider it ilegal anyway, as "a variant of AR-15"...

BTW is it me or do those stocks look awfully similar to Remington 870 stocks? Or perhaps 1100 due to the recoil spring.

If so, I'm just waiting for the moment someone buys the SCR and installs an 1100 AR15 grip and stock adapter on it.
HerpaDerp

I hope Ares was smart enough to make the stock compatible with existing shotgun stocks.

Here's a link to the NYFirearms forum.
http://nyfirearms.com/forums/laws-po...gal-nyc-2.html
Look at post #27. Claims he was told it IS legal.

Problem with the NYC licencing division is that they know absolutely nothing about guns, or gun laws, and so they basically pull guesses and made up answers out of their ass. So whether it's legal or not is entirely dependent on who you happen to be asking at the moment.
I called them once asking if a Mini-14 with plain wood stock and 5 round mag would be legal to register in NYC. The lady on the other end, without taking even a pause to think, ask me what kind of Mini-14 or even let me finish my sentence IMMEDIATELY said "NO, IT'S ILLEGAL" because the NYC AWB bans some firearms specifically by name. One of which is the Mini-14/F (folding stock model)
Yet when I go to a gun shop in Brooklyn, the owner is actually showing a wood stocked Mini to a guy and offering to handle the registration paperwork for him for a fee.

Basically when trying to register a "questionable" rifle. Go to a NYC FFL and let them handle the paperwork. I hear the licencing division generally lets registration sent in by an FFL through without much hassle because "they're in the business, they know what they're doin"
And NEVER ask the licencing division any questions about legality. Might as well just ask the bum on the corner. The answer will be about as good.

DC doesn't consider it a variant of the AR-15. Why would NYC? I don't see anything in the NYC rules that would make this non compliant.

bolt catch

Installed Ares' bolt catch today. took about 15 minutes.

I have been using an 1x4 MTAC with fastifire III that primary has for 499. It is low enough, has the eye relief depth and positioning I wanted.

I've run a dozen types of ammo and several makes/models/capacity of ar15 mags no problem.

I am not in love with the trigger but it has gotten less gritty with use.

Besides now solved bolt catch, I would like to see paddle or extension for mag release. my guess is that can be done.

SCR is miles ahead of a ruger mini 14. For me that is the appropriate comparison.

My advice to any future buyers is to look at SCR short sporter stock model instead of standard sporter. Reach is fine for me, but there are times when shorter is better, and you can always add temporary pad to a stock, but you can't temporarily reduce a full length one.

Feel free to post or pm any questions.

update: trigger, uppers

just a status report on this:

No issues so far. good variety of ammo down range with no problems. I have changed the charging handle to a raptor.

Two updates:

1) trigger: Spoke with Ares last week. They are swapping triggers for free to a 5lb one. Requires sending lower in to them, I will be sending it in in a couple of weeks.

2) There is an issue with some non mil spec uppers. If you want to replace the upper do take a look at this:

Hey I just ordered one too will pick up in a week from my ffl
I think I paid like $770 just for the rifle not including sales tax brand new

Ive been trying to search around about reviews of this rifle from ordinary people havent seen too much about it
Barely anything on you tube

I saw the post above about them switching out the trigger
not sure if this is for free, or if the newer rifles come with this now

I didnt dry fire mine at the shop to see how heavy it was, now I wish I had
Im hoping they have made them a little lighter by now
I will see when I get it my serial is in the high 1700's

I also ordered the bolt hold open, sadly not under $30 like some review websites had claimed more like $42 shipped but ive seen pics and looks like alot of work went into it

This isnt my first "ar", I do have some but living in Ca the way I have those configured im limited to 10rd mag and mag lock
Although its not bad at all to use the mag lock as its still a button that presses in to drop mags

Reason why I went with the ares how its configured you can now use any size mag on it thats a nice feature to have

Sure I could of went mini 14, saiga 223 but those use different mags
I have alot of ar mags which is why I was going to go with the kel tec until I saw the ares, since it has far more possibilities with changing out the upper for future use

Since I havent decided what optics to use, as it comes with no sights at all
I wanted to use some spare sights I have laying around, just so I dont have to dump even more money all at one time on some sort of expensive sight

I ordered a quad rail to replace the handguard and planning on bolting up sights to it for $20 its worth the try

Depending on how stable the quad rail is I could free float in the future or just scope it if my sights move too much to not keep it zeroed

I will post back once I do the mods

wasnt sure on what I wanted to do for sights, red dot or scope
and didnt want to invest hundreds on a good red dot now since after spending so much for the rifle

so I got a $20 quad rail which bolts down very tight

and $37 on some cz sights, which are super low and seem it may be the perfect setup for iron sights on this rifle

also trigger feels really smooth and light so I think they resolved the trigger thing by now

Chunky, could you link us to where you got the sights?

I'm seeing a few places with low picatinny rear sights, but having a devil of a time finding picatinny front sights low enough to match.

$37? Wow, that's way cheaper than the $150+ that LPA's similar sights run!

Ah, they're the CZ Evo subgun sights. I'd seen someone mention them as a possible low-enough option, but was having trouble finding folks who carried them. Guess I should've gone right to the mfg directly.

Are you finding that subgun front sight fine enough on a rifle, even for longer-distance, or is it more of a CQB iron sight/backup?

Would the front sight still work well if it were further out, like atop a railed gas block on a 20" barrel? Or is it just intended for a short sight radius?

i have not shot the rifle yet

but sighting at 25 yards its a perfect view I can see the front ball, and still see around it too

indoors say 5 yards its hard to see the front dot (low light), as the rear hole is very tiny
I suppose you could enlarge a touch, its like the small hole setting on ar sights but maybe smaller

the front dot is a huge white ball

got to shoot it today finally
functioned flawlessly
tried every new mag I had just to see if it would work with them all and it did

maybe 100 rounds through it
may be in my head but I swear it has no recoil
could be the stock, how you hold it but really easy to shoot

only negative, the cz front sight
the white bead is HUGE!!!!!!
I literally cant see what im aiming at
now I may drill out the rear sight hole touch larger because of this

one thing I noticed a few times putting my face up to the rifle I forgot to line up my eye with the rear sight
almost instinctively I think I was setting my head up for ar height sights
But I dont want to change them out now that its all zeroed in

Good news was my laser bore sight was like 2 clicks off when actually shooting it
but I may have been off some because I could not see the paper targetI was aiming at
thats fine with me im not expecting it to be super accurate
When I got home checked all bolts on the hand guard and sights
all were tight, so I dont think my cheap handguard will be an issue with keeping zero

got some short video clips I put together
