You might want to consider the Stoeger Cougars or Bersa Thunder Pros. The quality of these pistols far exceeds their relatively inexpensive price IMO.

For those on a budget, in my opinion, the best full sized 9mm is the Taurus PT-92. It is a licensed copy of the Beretta 92 and costs about $200 less. Academy had it on sale for $328 about six weeks ago (pre-hysteria).

The Stoeger Cougar 8000 has to be one of the best gun buys on the market. It will have you when you first grip it. It has to be one of the most grips on the market. Rotating barrel so it stays on target better and much less recoil. Made in Turkey on Beretta machines.

I'll give a hearty second for the Taurus PT-92. Great value, great performance, and easy to maintain.

I know that Taurus has a reputation (somewhat deserved) for quality control, but not for this series of pistols. Mine has seen me through dozens of IPSC and Steel Challenge competitions, and it's gone *bang* every time.

The Zastava EZ9 still gets my vote, although prices climbed when Arsenal became the importer. I still think the CZ99 and it's offspring are the best 'sleeper' ever made. If you're a SIG fan, try one!

Look into Smith & Wesson 2nd or 3rd gen 9mm, 659, 910, 915, 5903, 5904, 5906 , etc...
Great old steel accurate, will shoot just about anything you feed it and in your price range.

The Stoeger Couger is a great deal for the money, talked my brother in law and my sonny boy into buying one. Have yet to shot at or cursed. I particularly like my son's in 9MM.

Agree with GreySmoke.... Picked up a LEO trade-in S&W 6906 for $330. In very good condition. It shoots as good as it looks, and it looks great(Stainless on Aluminum lower).

Now if I can find a couple of spare mags.....

cant say how good they are but just ordered a high standard 1911 gi model 45acp from buds for 419.00 from what ive read about them they seem to be good entry level 1911s

Id like to where u fellas are finding p2022s, SR9s, or even Stoeger 8000s for less than $400.00 new.......I have been shopping alot lately and havent found these for those prices.............unless you count web specials that sell out in less than an hour. The only dealers that I have found that ARE NOT jacking prices up by 20-30% are the big boxes and then you better be there soon after the shipments come in......just the way it is right now

I picked up my 2022 from psa for $349 less than a month ago. It was a special but they've done the same special multiple times.

Today, I bought a Stoeger Cougar 8000 at Academy Sports in Tulsa, OK for $399.99 ($434.05 with sales tax.) I got the last one they had in stock at that store.

They also had a SP2022 for $429.99.

I would be looking at used S&W 659 or 5906's. Since this is your first gun, these 9mm's have some features you should know about:

1. All stainless - the weight will help you control the gun and make recoil a bit milder

2. They have de-cockers which lets you drop the hammer safely on a round in the chamber

3. They also have a manual safety

4. They are double action/single action

5. Capacity (as I recall) is 16 rounds with one in the chamber.

6. They are extremely well made and generally don't break.

7. They can handle hot loads.

Sig sp2022!!! Its my least expensive gun but its my favorite. I love that gun and she loves my back 100% of the time.

There are plenty of guns in your price range. You should be able to find a used G17 or 19 (if you consider the 19 full sized...) for around that. Just look around...ask your LGS.

I see some suggesting the SP2022. It's a good gun. My wife has one and so does her dad. But you have to be aware that it only comes with one magazine. In addition, I haven't been able to find mags for it less than $40 (and right now, I can't find any). So if you're like me and figure that minimum number of mags is three, you're looking at around $480...and that's assuming you can find any right now.

To compare, my Gen 4 G19 that came with 3 mags (and I've bought 2 extras) cost about the same as my wifes SP2022 that we bought 2 spares for.

I got my Beretta 96d fs .40 cal. for $420+tax (talked him down from $460),
used, but I fell in love with it, and it has ran like a beast for about 2-3 years now (my memorys not wut it used to be). Yea no complaints, great gun. I also seen used Glocks, P99s, and other reputable brands for around $450, try to talk 'em down...Cheers!
