.308 ammunition prices
posted this in an unrelated topic, figured those who shoot .308 and are on a budget would be interested
http://www.rifle-company.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?t=431 contains a list of about 30 differenet surplus/bulk web sites. shows Country ammo made in, year made, bullet weight, box size, and price per round. Also notes if a place is currently out of .308 This list has been updated twice in the last week so I think we can assume the poster is active . His post does not currently contain sportsmans guide who from what I have seen currently have the absolute cheapest .308 (http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/c....aspx?a=524682) at roughly 33 cents per round. Just thought I would share |

there might already be a thread that covers this, and if there is a apologize but would someone mind explaining the difference between ammunition types. I understand the bullet weight kinda. However "steel cased" "soft point" etc escape me

steel casing is the actual shell is made of steel instead of brass..
soft point refers to bullet construction, vs hollowpoint or a bonded core fmj or full metal jacket is "military ammo" usually used for target practice, plinking, ect..in many states it is illegal to hunt with fmj because the projectile does not open up in the body and what would have been a kill shot turned into a really long, slow, painful death for the animal..

hey teirst, keep in mind that .33 cents a round is BEFORE shipping, and sportsmans guide will rape you on shipping, it will be about 55 cents around by the time you get it, the only reason that order from sportsmans guide every great now and then is that they are only about an hour from me and i can go pick it up in person...BEWARE OF SHIPPING COSTS ON AMMO...

Rifle Company is a quiet little forum with a ton of M14/M1A data,
they also cover just about everything else related to firearms. The cheapest 7.62x51mm Surplus on the Internet

All that surplus ammo is nice, lacquer coated brass, (if even it is brass) corrosive primers, questionable background.
We can go to WalMart & buy nice shiny new Federal Power Shok .308 ammo, 150 grain soft point bullets for $13.95 for a box of 20. Reloadable brass, accurate & reliable. The stuff shoots extremely well in my DPMS .308 yielding groups averaging 1" @ 100 yds consistently. And it is made in USA. Roger

ya but you never know when a huge stock is going to come in.
I know the ammo is not very good, but when it hits 10 cents a round you can bet i will pick some up the plink with. |

Sportsmans Guide problem
I can confirm that Sportsmans Guide will do a bait and switch on you about shipping costs. My experience was that joining their Buyers Club for $30 seems to allow a normal shipping cost, except that if you get a refund on withdrawing from the Club, your shipping cost will be "expedited".

Yes, some ranges ban FMJ and steel jacketed rifle ammo, and allow hollow point and OTM and soft point. They say it is to reduce ricochets. My guess is they are courting hunters and match shooters and are trying to keep the hosers away.

The range I'm familiar with doesn't have a problem w/ FMJ rifle ammo, their insurance co does. That's why they can't allow FMJ rifle bullets.
