S&W 38 Special CTG

I have a gun that was left by my stepfather when he died. One of the neighbors wants to buy it, but I don't know anything about guns. Here is all the information I have on it. Can anyone help me figure it out?

SMITH&WESSON 38S&W SPECIAL CTG. REVOLVER, Pat.1914.Serial No.409541

The N3xxxxx serial range ran from 1975 to 1976.

.38 Military & Police, 4th Change. Serial number dates it to 1920's.
These went on to become the model 10 when S&W began assigning model numbers around 1957.
These were pretty common and value depends heavily on condition, ranging from a couple hundred in beat-up to well over a thousand in "as new" condition.

I got one for ya. Don't know what model or have pics, but all I know is what I am told. It is a or a .44 mag. Entire gun is engraved with scrolls and fancy stuff. Mother of pearl grips and one side is carved with a steer head. It is rumored to have been part of the Dalton gang(Slim Dalton is what I was told) at one time. It has two sets of numbers on it, first the numbers on the frame by the cylinder and on the cylinder match and the are 79023, the numbers on the butt of the grip are 30834. This gun will be in my safe one day(it is my wife's grandmother's) and just trying to figure out how old it is and what model if anyone knows. Thanks for any info given.

Duckman3279,

Dalton gang was 1890's so it can't be a 44 special (1906) or 44 Magnum (1955).
It could be a .44 Double Action (44 Russian). Serial numbers for those ran from 1 in 1881 to 54668 in 1913.
Without a better discription/pictures I can't be much more help.

Can someone tell me the date of manufacture for a S&W M17 K-22 S/N K43xxx. (I hope I'm doing this the right way.)

Serial numbers in 1948 ran from K18732 to K73121. Assuming you've got the right number of digits in the serial number, "Mod 17" or the equivalent should not appear stamped in the yoke cutout - model numbers weren't assigned until nearly a decade later, so the gun is simply a K-22 Masterpiece (pre-17).

S&W Serial Number

Thanks, FlyFish. That was almost instantaneous and very helpful. Very kind of you to do this for others.

SCSW doesn't have as much information on semi-autos as for revolvers, but in this case you appear to be in luck: the range used in 1991 is listed as THA1016 to TVC7046.

Hi,

I need some assistance in finding out the date of manufacture for a model 10-5, serial number D1435XX.

Also, I'm looking for a blued 5" replacement barrel. I tried S&W, Brownells, Numrich, and Bud's, plus I'm trying to reach Jack First. Any other suggestions?

It's a tapered pinned barrel.

Thanks.

Two Smith K Frames

1969-70; the range was D90001 to D330000. I can't help with the barrel search, other than to note that a good gunsmith should be able to work with a barrel intended for a non-pinned frame, if that helps.

Thanks FlyFish. Numrich has the tapered 10, 10-10 & 10-9 used take offs, if they can be made to work on a 10-5.

Late 1984; the range that year was TAA1985 to TAD9549. 1984 was the year that S&W changed from the previous "A" prefix for semi-autos to the three-letter prefix starting at "TAA."

Not enough information - need to know at least the caliber, whether the gun has a safety lever along the backstrap, etc. Best of all would be a photo if you have one.
