30-6 Springfield loads

What would you guys recommend as a decent powder to load 168 gr. HPBT MatchKings?

I've had very good results with 58.0 gr. of IMR 4350, with both the 168 match King and 165 Game King bullets. It yields about 2700 in my Riger 77R with 22 inch bbl, though manuals show somewhat higher.

The Sierra Rifle Reloading Manual, 4th Edition shows COL for both bullets at 3.340 but this is too long for my rifle, and for my son's 1903 Springfield Sporter. 3.295 is about as long as I care to go.

ALSO--While the above powder charge is shown in two different Speer manuals, it is a bit above max in Sierra and Hornady books.

Sierra shows accuracy load with the Match King as 45.9 gr or IMR 4064, for 2600 fps. On previous page, they show the accuracy load for the 165 GameKing at 47.9 gr of 4064, for 2700 fps.

Why? I don't know. That's what it says.

I load for my dad's Rem 742 using Sierra 165 and 180gr Game Kings and IMR 4064; it works great in his gun.

I asked one of the Sierra technicians about what powder to use since I would be loading for a semi auto and IMR 4064 was his suggestion. I was so pleased with the results that I've never even tried another powder in '06.

BTW, I also use IMR 4064 in my .308 with 165gr Game Kings and in .30-30 w/170gr bullets.

Maybe I'm just partial to IMR 4064.

Yeah, once you get toward the 180-grain bullets, the slower powders work better. As said, 4064 and 4350...I imagine H414 would work okay...

It's the old game of "varies from gun to gun" for accuracy, particularly where maximum velocity is less of an issue. You can find beaucoup opinons about that.

I've mostly used 4064; pretty good velocity, and quite accurate.
