Mossberg 590 vs Rem 870

I dont want to start any flame wars, just looking for honest opinions. I have a good deal of experience with the remington 870s and Im looking into a mossber 590 (18",speedfeed stock, ghost rings) for a HD setup. What advantages / disadvantages does one brand have over the other? Thanks!

ford vs chevy... everyone has his own opinon... keyword OPINION. theres not really a definite "this one is better than the other." my personal preference is the 870. mossberg vs remington is all opinions (at least in this situation)

As T-Ray said it is all a matter of opinion. Here is mine fwiw. I own a Mossy 500 and have it ready to go here at home. The dept. I work for uses the
870P. I prefer the Mossy because it is a tad lighter and therefore easier for me to shoot. Not to mention pack around while walking a field all day long.

Either way you will be well served with either choice. Get the one that feels the best to you. And that you think has the better manual of arms. Then be safe and practice as much as possible. Best of luck to you.

If you are a lefty, or ambidextrous use is important, the tang safety of the Mossy is much better than the cross-bolt of the Remington. Both guns can be kitted-out with lots of aftermarket stuff, but I liked that the 590 came with ghost ring sights, full-length (supported) mag tube, and sling swivels, over the counter. The 870 is the "police shotgun", and the 590 was, for years, the Marine Corps issue gun, so take your pick. Must you have a bayonet lug?

What could I expect to pay for a mossberg 590A1 (18" w/ speedfeed)? Also, do all the A1s come with metal trigger guards?

As all have said, they are both good guns.

I went with Mossberg because I like the safety placement.

I started out with Remington's, but am now solidly in the Mossberg Camp. Either are good shotguns. The 18" 590 is a sleeper and an excellent choice. Vang Comp makes a mag extension for it also.

We will most likelly be adding 4 to our inventory this year as student loaners for courses.

i just looked on their site and i didnt see a 590 so i cant give you a price range

MSRP for the 18" 590 w/GRS Model 51518-7 or 51518-4 or 51520-7 is $519-$562, I bet that you will be hard pressed to find one that costs that much though. I'm looking at a new 590 50665 20" gun on gunbroker for $379 with a MSRP of $525.

was my choice. I bought an express when I was on a budget and have kitted it up little by little ever since. Speedfeed short fore end, Knoxx stock, side saddle, heavy mag spring, locking safety for a non locking factory one.

Next I will change out the cd spring and extr/eject. I will prolly leave the trigger guard alone as I like the plastic and will also leave the trigger with the lighter pull.

Now over 1000 rounds with no failures at all. Best gun I own IMO.

can someone explain to me what the speedfeed is? i see the pictures of the little shell in the stock but i am intrigued as to find out how this works and/or what it actually is.

I like the 870, it just seems smoother. Most of the Mossbergs I've handled
seemed a bit clunkier. That being said though, I wouldn't hesitate to buy either.

That's all it is, a place to put shells in the stock for quick access.

oh i thought you like stuck the shells there and somehow it would chamber from the stock and i was like "did they put magic in these or something" wow that explains a lot, also now that i think about it, i was pretty stupid to suspect that.

One of the advantages of the 870 and 500A is that you can buy mulitple barrels for multiple uses. On top of that, you can get magazine extensions for the 870s.
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but with the 590, you've got a "tactical" shotgun, period. Your variety in barrels is thin walled and heavy walled.

One of the joys of a pump is being able to reload in the middle of the magazine. That being the case:

I bought a 500A field gun with a 28-inch ported barrel and three choke tubes from Dick's on sale for $200. They're about the same price regularly at Wally World.

I ordered an 18.5-inch barrel from Midway that should be waiting for me when I get home for $64.

That's a bird gun, clay gun, squirrel/rabbit gun, defensive weapon and close-range deer gun for $264 pretax.
