12 ga shell for a kid to shoot

Picked up a Stevens 350 tonight. I got it mainly for range fun and maybe home defense if my glock won't get the job done. I know my 10 y/o will be wanting to shoot it. Any reccomendations on a shell that won't put him on the ground. I typically buy my ammo at wal Mart and usually they don't have much advice.

The cheap bulk packs WM sells are fairly low recoil

If he's big enough to hold the gun correctly it really shouldn't matter...

The stock is most likely too long.. Dont let him put it on his biceps as he will have a very sore shoulder very quickly. When the upper arm is raised there is a natural pocket formed in the shoulder, that is where the stock should be when the gun is fired. Putting a recoil pad on it will aggrevate the situation.

His arms are long enough but he doesn't weigh much

I had that problem when I was learing to shoot dove. (Well shoot AT dove- still can't hit them)

My Dad has 2 Savage 12ga pumps (model # escapes me) one with a recoil pad and one with out.
The Recoil pad actually made the stock too long for me and I actaully felt MORE of the recoil.... The other fit much better (I was 9? 11?) and fits like a glove now...

If he puts the stock in the 'shoulder pocket' langenc is talking about he should be good to go.

I don't think you can get it at WM. The price at bass pro is pretty good, if there is one near you and you have it shipped for free to the store. ONe local guns store clips me $10 for a box.

Do NOT buy the bulk packs as they are 1-1/8 ounce loads. They do sell 1 ounce Top Gun loads that are cheaper and lighter......otherwise find the AA training rounds that are low payload and low velocity low recoil rounds

Winchester AA light target loads. Look for the picture of a feather on the box and also the warning "may not cycle some semi autos". These have only 7/8 ounce of shot and are loaded to sub-sonic velocities, think of it as ammo that converts a 12 gauge into a 20 gauge.

A lot of bargain ammo is loaded with only 7/8 or 1 ounce of shot, however, it is often loaded to something like 1400 fps in order to cycle semi-autos with that light load. This means it still kicks.

Just a point on the Mini shells. They are very light recoiling and would be ideal for recoil sensitive people. That being said, they are known to have problems feeding in most pump guns other than the Win 1300. There is a write up about this in the Aguila Mini shell product description on the Midway site. FWIW, I have a box of them for my wife to use in my O/U should need arise.
