Pup Naming Time

Since I lost my pup last December, I've taken in two Catahoula Leopard dogs. Neither one made the cut and both were returned to the breeder.

I have since contracted with Double Ott Catahoula's in LA and, yesterday, stopped in on my way from TX to visit the pup. It was a short visit. At 6 weeks, he demonstrates all the qualities I'm looking for in a tracker: inquisitive, "nosey", alert and feisty. Gonna be a handful but, if I do my job, it'll be well worth it.

You know you're keeping a pup when you decide he has to have a name. This one needs a name. The current front runner came to me while listening to the Ipod on the way home: Gringo
Yep, "Gringo" as in Double Ott's Gringo Pistolero.

But I'm open to suggestions. A free one year subscription to SWAT for the man or woman who knocks the name Gringo Pistolero out of the box.

He's got a blue and a dark eye, so how about:
Cockeye
Freakeye
Marilyn
Manson
Marilyn Manson
Ole Blue (like Ole Yeller, heheheh)

He kinda looks like a dairy cow, so how about:
Dairy Cow
Dairy King
Dairy
Mitt (as in a Catcher's Mitt, hehheheh)

No?

Spotty
Peepers
Whitefoot

And lastly, how about SWAT ???!!!

If its a dog for hunting afield and you have to call it over long distances, I recommend 'Duke'. I remember reading an old article in the back of Rifleman or Guns and Ammo way back in the day. The author was getting a new hunting dog and was trying to figure out which name was most practical.

Try yelling the name as loud as you can and see which one works out best. In his experience, 'Duke' was easiest to holler. I'm sure there are similiar nuances you can use.

Barring having to track down your dog through vocal antics, I like 'Gringo'. Of course I watched 'True Grit' again the other night so 'Rooster' also comes to mind - maybe 'Hando'!

Absolutely beautiful.

Pardon the scifi geek moment, but his coloration reminds me of the Dagger genetically engineered soldiers from the 2nd season of Seaquest DSV. Combine that thought with the concept of the dagger, which was a gentleman's constant companion, and the name "Dagger" seems to fit well.

Although as camoflauged as he is, perhaps "Multicam" might fit.

Rich, Your pup looks like a fire to me - he's got orange flames and a smoldering, smoking appearance, just waiting to explode and since he is going to be a tracker - relentlessly pursuring over all obstacles through the woods to get at his prey that knows to fear and run from him - I have to go with Terra Fuego (Latin for Ground and Spanish for Fire) "GROUND FIRE" because that is what ya got - Ground Fire! Or if you want the two syllable or less - Fuego.

Or you can pick any other languages to come up with this name.
Complete Spanish - Terreno Fuego
Latin - Terra Flamma

Few names that came to mind:

-Eddy (as in whirlpool or current, due to the flowing colors of the coat)

-Turbinio (italian for "swirl" - another coat reference)

-Punto (italian for "point" or "spot" - another coat reference)

-Pista (italian for "track")

And finally...

-Cane (italian for "dog")

Cane is a fine name; a good strong name. In the second picture, he looks like a Cane.

Nice looking furry pal there, Rich - you're gonna like him. I like 2 syllable names for dogs. So that their name is 2 syllables, to get their attention, but specific commands are 1-syllable (sit, stay, down, heel, come, fetch, off). Don't have a suggestion yet - will offer when I have them. I have a Rudy, and a Nika, and an Ally (aka Allison Krauss, aka "AK"), right now. Inv, I had a "Casey" dog once...

I personally have a dog named "Duke." Great dog, and an awesome name. My brother in law just named his pup "Scout" which is a great name in my honest opinion. Especially if you are gonna use him for a bird, boar, bear etc dog. So my suggestions are "Duke" or "Scout." GL man. Beautiful animal btw. Awesome pics.
