The .45 ACP Family

The .45 ACP Family

Recently I did some AmmoGuide.com research on the .45 ACP and other rounds inspired by the .45 ACP. I thought others might enjoy these screenshots of the info I accumulated...

Yeah, 45 Auto Rim!

I can understasnd why you're calling these cartridges the ".45 ACP family," what with them all having same dimensions but for length. But there's no way you can avoid calling the .45 Auto Rim an immediate descendant of the .45 ACP. Rim is vastly different, yes, but rest of it is a near-duplicate of the military ball cartridge.

And, speaking of "family:" How about the .38/45 and 9mm/45? I mean, the .45 AC case necked down and fired from a rechambered .Super .38 or 9mm barrel. And, haven't I read of a .30/45?

Me, I'll stick with only the .45 ACP and Auto rim.

Merry Christmas, all.

Apologies for my grevious error. No rim bigot here. My original AmmoGuide Search (using the AmmoGuide Cartridge Identification and Search Tool)included a rim dimension of .480"+-.01" so the ARim didn't show up. But here's a graphic with the Auto Rim included, right beside it's brother...

Again, just click the graphic to compare the rounds ballistically.

Interesting idea but non-452" diameter wildcat variations weren't in my original research goals. But here are a few more .45 ACP derivatives on AmmoGuide of other bullet diameters (the .45 Remington-Thompson being .447")...

And Happy 2009, BTW.

.45 ACP "Family"

Jeffredo Gunsight had a complete line of cartridges based on necked down .45 ACP cases or shortened, reamed and necked down .308/.30-06 cases.

5.56mm J-Mag

.257 J-Mag

.308 x 1"

.357 J-Mag

.41 J-Mag

.45 J-Mag

.45 J-Mag Mk2

There may be others. Those are the ones I am familiar with.

45 GAP is to make a smaller grip in the Glock pistols. It is higher pressure than a 45 ACP.

That's the ".45 Automatic Short"...

The .45 Automatic Short (aka .45 HP) was developed to enable legal ownership by private citizens of pistols designed for the .45 ACP cartridge in countries where the possession of automatic handguns in military chamberings is not allowed by law. Italy, France and Mexico are among those countries.

This cartridge is a .45 ACP case shortened by one millimeter. A regular 230-grain FMJ bullet is seated to the same OAL - muzzle velocity is identical to the 45 Automatic.

The only modification required to the firearm is a barrel change. All other parts remain the same. The shorter chamber prevents loading and firing of full length 45 ACP cartridges, thereby complying with the letter of the law.

Only Hirtenberger AG of Austria has commercially loaded this ammunition. It was produced between 1985 and 1987, now discontinued.

(Thanks to Max Velocity for submitting this cartridge.)

Wow, that was an informative post Mike! Clearly you can see my desire for a 45 Winmag Carbine though, right?!

I think Cooper was right. This platform combo that I speak of would outclass the .223 setup, especially in an urban scenario.

C'mon, be honest! Who all would buy a 45Winmag carbine/upper if they started making it??

I KNOW I would! Probably buy 2 or 3.
