A load that I like for my .357 is a slight variation of the Keith heavy .38 Special load: 13.5grn #2400 under a 158grn hardcast bullet. This doesn't kick quite as hard as factory 158grn ammo, but it lets you know you're shooting substantially more than a .38 +P (I'd guestimate 1050-1100fps from my 2.5" snubby). If that's a bit more than you want, just load the maximum .38+P load in Magnum brass. Here's a good site you might want to have a look at.

I load 13.5gr. 2400 under a 358156 cast gc. Not sure what the pressure is but I carry them in both of my mod. 60s

140 gr Hornady XTP over 17.3 grains H110. 1200 fps, low STD. This is from a 2 1/2" Model 66. I tried the next listed load (Hornady Manual) at 17.8 grains and did not get a worthwhile improvement in velocity, just more muzzle blast. So, that's my load.

Seems too much...how? What kind of bullet and what weight. What issues make you think it's too much? What is the loading data you are using? You should be able to use the 700X quite successfully in the shorter barrel.
Here's the Hodgdon website in case you don't have it. http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp Just click on agree, it's free, and look up loads for any cartridge they have data for. Also, welcome to the boards! There's a few old geezers like me here, a few that are fairly smart, and then we also have a few dregs but they don't last long. It's mostly a friendly, helpful crowd, so enjoy the forums! |
