Handgun hunters

I have A Ruger NM Blackhawk 45/45acp with a 7.5 barrel. I'm thinking of going with a scope, never used one on a handgun. Would something like the Weaver 301 no drilling new holes work?

How do ya'll mount your scopes on a Blackhawk. Please help me out with type of scopes. 100 yards or less, mostly less, as a lot of the time it will be woods and thicket bordering high sage grass fields.

I don't even know if I can shoot a scoped handgun but think I'd be ok after a bit of a learning curve.

I had trouble seeing deer in cover through my handgun scope and when they were close up (think feet not yards). Best thing I ever did was take it off. YMMV - try one outdoors on game if possible before you buy.

I use a Weigand mount with an Ultradot red dot sight. I used a 2X scope for years, but at revolver ranges a red dot works better for me.

Yup, Red Dot every time. All I use on all my hunting handguns. Had all bases mounted by a 'smith. Never regretted it.

Read Midway's reviews of the Weaver 301 and 301S (silver). Guys report it fits the Super Blackhawk easily, but that some fitting is required for the Blackhawk. I bought a 301S for my SBH, but haven't installed it yet. I have one of Weigand's no drill bases on a 5.5" Redhawk, and it is great. If they make the same for 7.5" Blackhawk, that might be the better way to go.

As far as scope is concerned, I have a 2X Leupold on my Redhawk, but am thinking about switching to a red dot.

I bought one of those clamp on bases for a sbh, it did alright with 44spc but would'nt stay put for mag loads.

The Weigand requires a Blackhawk to be drilled and tapped. Thats the only way to go IMO on a magnum handgun.
