Technically a 9.0 mm...
If you like really beefy, that effectively is a 9mm, you could also look at the Desert Eagle .357. Small hands need not apply.

The CZ 75 is an older design. Have a look at the SP01. All steel, better controls.

If you are looking for a beefy 9mm, try to find a used Smith and Wesson 5906.
A really fine 3rd generation 9mm that is built like a tank. Another good choice is a CZ SP01. All steel. Both have large magazines that would encourage bad guys to reevaluate their career choices. The Smith is better finished ( by a lot ) than the CZ but both run really well.

If your wife has the same hand size as you, then beefy pistol may work for both of you. Otherwise, consider a less recoiling pistol for your wife; maybe a .22LR like a Ruger 22/45 or Browning Buckmark to help with the flinching problem.

+1 on the two previous recommendations for the Smith & Wesson 5906.
I found this one, as a police trade-in for a good bit less than $300. It was pretty rough on the outside and dirty, but perfect mechanically. If you're willing to break one down all the way, clean it thoroughly, and bead blast it, you can get it back to, pretty much, brand new condition: 2012-08-19_20-13-05_426 by 69murray, on Flickr Maybe a new set of grips for ~ $16.00 as well. MecGar makes 17 round mags for it also. Oh, and if it ever quits shooting, it would make a terrific instrument for 'blunt force trauma' . |

If by "beefy" you mean heavy, the ultimate is a Para Ordnance 18.9 At 48oz fully loaded (18 rounds) it is definately beefy. With fiber optic front sights and adjustable rear target sights it is loaded with all the extras. However it will costs nearly double what your G19 does.

Again, the S&W 5906 BUT make sure it has the Hogue grips, not the hard plastic factory grips. Bought mine about a year ago from CDNN, and that was one deciding factor for me (the Hogue grips). Its a big handful, too much weight for comfortable CC, but the recoil is as easy as a 38 with WC loads, and has a 15-round magazine. I love mine.
And on a side note, my condolences for living in a state that does not recognize American Freedoms. As the man said, "Go West Young Man..." It's sad that the original 13 colonies are so down on the basic issue that helped set them free from a tyranny.

Try the steel frame Baby Eagle from Magnum Research. It is quite substantial, has super low recoil, and is in the same price range as your Glock.

The CZ 75 and its siblings (like the SP-01) are a good fit for many hand sizes, unless you have very small hands.
They run great and are built tough. Internal finish isn't as good as a Beretta or Sig, but they cost much less than the Sigs and a bit less than the Berettas. They are finished and fit well where it matters though. One of the most comfortable pistols to hold and shoot that I have shot. Also very accurate. |

If you can find one, a Browning High Power---the ones made here, not the FN. While they are undoubtedly good guns, in my opinion nothing beats the original Brownings.

Sigs are beefy. They suffer the same elephantitus as the Berettas.

Ruger P series. Built like tanks, very affordable, and I would definitely consider them "Beefy".

The more I use my S&W59 the more I wish it had at least 1 1/2" more barrel.
The 59 is just too short for proper balance. I'd been planing on ordering an after market barrel threaded for a Muzzle comp, but they sold out before I got my order in. These had been on sale at Numrich some years ago. I'd much prefer a long slide conversion, but everyone I've mentioned this to says my early model 59 is a collectors item and should not be altered, especially since its in near Cherry condition. |

Lots of good 9s out there buddy!
My favorite is the Browning HP! I'd keep the Glock though. You may find a need for a pocket sized pistol if the Zombies attack! |

I first would recommend Baretta or Taurus - I have a pt-99 in s.s. that is one beefy gun. Ultra reliable, built like a tank and pretty good selection of grips.
I have hogue rubber on them, but was looking for something different in g10 and there were several different suppliers I found. I would also place my Baretta Px4 storm. It is a polymer frame, but the slide and controls make it feel much beefier than others. Along with the heavy slide and rotating barrel, the felt recoil is not bad. Great gun. |

Beretta 92
I have the Beretta 92fs, first pistol I have ever bought. Quality piece of equipment; just added the ps4 storm sub compact also. The 92 is fun to shoot and very accurate.

I have huge hands (XXXL gloves) so I prefer pistols that are full sized. I got a Ruger P85, then a P89 and P95 in 9mm. They are big and heavy....just like I like them!

Beefy and inexpensive... Guess thats a CZ or a Glock 34.
Throw a couple hundred more at it for a nice 9mm 1911? Maybe a big ol XDm 5.25? |

My first thought was a CZ, but then I was thinking about how long the reach is for the trigger in DA mode. Then I read later that you wanted something thicker than a G19. Hmmm CZ75B could do it.
I like the copy I have: Magnum Research Baby Eagle. Ruger P95 is pretty reliable, and will save you some money. Everyone else has recommended a LOT of good stuff for your needs. I think that another question that you'll have to decide is what type of action: Striker, SA, DAO, or DA/SA? That will help to narrow your choices. I personally like my Hi Power more than any other 9 I have or have shot, but the CZ holds more rounds with factory mags [unless maryland is like california and has a 10 round max]. |

Just get a longer ported barrel and an extended magazine for your G19..presto you have a bigger pistol. And if you ever move to a state where you can carry again just return it back.
