1873 accuracy/range
Since the 1873 rifle I am getting uses .45 Colt pistol ammo I was wondering how far and acurate this rifle is in comparason to new rifle rounds in a similar modern lever action rifles. Just wondering, I have other rifles that are probably far more accurate, but thought I see what the practical range of this CAS rifle might be. I might like to have some long distance fun with it sometime.
Thanks, Mooney in PA |

Try 100 yards. then 125, then maybe 150.

I'd say practical limits would be 100 yds. for hunting. You might stretch target work beyond that.

"This dog don't hunt" and I hope you don't hold that against me. The only hunting training I've had was with the m16 in the Army Never had time for or friends into the hunting scene while growing up in the city.
I'm just a target shooter for fun, I love playing golf with a shotgun, so sporting clays is lots of fun, now I'm getting into the Cowboy Action Shooting thing. I was just wondering if I could stretch this 1873 out to 200+ yards. I have a M1A so the 1873 doesn't have to reach that far, but I will try to see how far the 1873 will go eventually. Thanks, Mooney |

It'll go that far and you might be able to hit a large gong consistently but I wouldn't exactly call it accurate at that range.

I was playing with my rossi 92 45 colt, using a lyman tang sight with std pressure lead loads @100 I think I could easily stretch it to 200 and keep most shots on a pie plate(ok maybe some shots)
any way it sounds like fun.

I was reading about how shots of 1000 yards were doable with a sharps rifle back in the day, so just wondering what other rifles were capable of long range "kill" shots in the old west/frontier days.
Fun for sure, just another reason to go out and shoot |

I saw a post with some good 200 metre shooting with a .44 WCF 1873. The .45 Colt was not designed as a rifle cartridge and you may or may not be able to stretch it so far. Cowboy Pistol Caliber Lever Action Metallic Silhouette competition is shot at 50 to 100 metres on half size targets, and would be the natural competitive home for that rifle outside CAS.
I doubt Billy Dixon was shooting a .50-140 in 1874, the round did not come out until the Sharps Rifle Company was on its corporate deathbed in 1880. A .50-110 Sharps is just a .50-90 with more powder compressed into the 2.5" case. The OTHER .50-110 is a Winchester '86 cartridge. |

I can hit rams at 200 yds offhand about 2/3 of the time.
