savage 99
I have been wishing for a Savage 99 for perhaps 20 years and recently, acquired an older model (shell counter) rifle in .250-3000
It is in fine shape but I am very interested in gunsmithing tips, dissasembly, etc, and have no idea where to begin. Any books or web sites? Any recurring problems to head off? Are parts available? Felt certain there would be a '99 fan on this channel. And what a rifle!!!!!!!!!!

The Savage 99 is a great rifle. I have the 99E model with a 20in barrel in 308win without counter. Try contacting Savage Arms. You can also contact The American Gunsmith Association for help in the takedown of the 99.

That's a great rifle!
Disassembly is well-documented with good pictures in the Gun Digest Book of Assembly/Dissassembly, Part IV, "Centerfire Rifles." I got my copy from an Ebay auction. Clemson

Numrich Gun Parts Corporation (www.e-gunparts.com) has a PDF format takedown schematic for your gun available for purchase and download. Click on "Schematics" on the left-hand side of the page and follow the instructions. You may also call Numrich at 845.679.4867 (Customer Service).
As for information about your treasure, the following came from the Savage Website (www.savagearms.com): "Q. Where do I find parts information or gunsmith services on older model Savage products? A. One piece of advice. DO NOT try to reduce the sear engagement on the 99 Savage. Doing so can result in the rifle firing before it is locked and that will mean one less old Savage 99, although the design almost always prevents serious injury.
FWIW, I do not recommend tinkering with that gun at all. Like most civilian guns of the era, it was never meant to be taken apart by the owner for fun. Jim |
