Some use Crisco for muzzleloaders I've heard tell ....

Far as I'm concerned, after the casting, the sizing/lubing (maybe with a gas check), doing the case prep, & the rest of the whole reloading stuff - not to mention that "extra special" case prep for those really accurate loads (like in my HBAR ), I'd buy bullet lube for twice as much.

Just what I'd need - another thing to make ...

Econolube

Never used it - I don't currently cast my own - but I have heard some recommend a 50/50 mix of paraffin and the wax used in toilet seal rings. These are about a buck each at Home Depot.

Do any of the bullet lubes smoke less than the rest? I currently use copper plated from West Coast Bullets but may want to cast some WFN or long nosed heavies for the SBH.

PD,

Head over to shooters.com and search the cast bullet forum thread. On the search page, type in "Felix Lube".

Regards

Making Bullet lube

Making Bullet lube to cover the grease grove is not what bullet lubing is all about. You must put a lube in the grove[s] that will PREVENT LEADING!!

There are "SELLERS" out there that will sell you a CASE of most anything you want. I know. I buy in CASE QUANITIES [12]. It saves running out. When you get down to 3 or 4 tubes of, say, bullet lube, it's time to re-order.

FWFL

You should definately try the FWFL, or Felix World Famous Lube. Works great. I've posted the URL before, and I'll try to lok for it for you again. Do a search and you'll see it though.

Say a "thank you" to Felix when you cook this up...he did a great job.

Visit Felix and others on the www.shooterstalk.com Cast Bullets forum.

Here it is:

http://castpics.n3.net/ Click on "Lube Recipie"

I advise against the use of parrafin, or maybe use jsut a tiny tiny bit...it makes the lube too hard to go through a lubri-sizer.

You rang? Yes, I use Crisco for lubing muzzleloader bullets and patches that won't exceed 2000fps. Works well for that. Most lubes for smokeless bullets add beeswax to crisco to make the lube. Given the relative difficulty and/or cost in obtaining beeswax if one is not a honeybee, buying an over the counter lube such as rooster red or alox makes a lot more sense.

Castpics is alive and well, but you have the wrong URL. Try this:

http://www.castpics.net

Go to the Resear and Data page and find Felix World Famous Lube. Look around and enjoy the new castpics.

btw, I use this exclusively now. No reason to use anything else. Also, if you intend to make some and cannot find anhydrous lanolin, look on the castpics links page for Majestic Mountain. They should have it.

If you wonder how I know all this, I'm the webmaster.

Just wondering, isn't the wax seal ring for a toilet ( like Cal4D4 mentioned )bees wax? They are available at plumbing supply stores and are quite cheap.

Anyone know for sure?

Sundog, thanks.

I don't know what's in a toilet wax ring, but I do know that John Linebaugh said he'd used them for years with a tiny bit of graphite mixed in.
