73 Cal slugs, 600grain? or other questions...
Hey all,
I was cleaning out my spam folder, and while waiting for it all to delete, I saw something from someone on thefiringline about 73 cal slug questions... SO.... blame gmail, sorry! No idea please ask me here on the forum, or send a private message here. ANywAy... On the subject of 73cal slugs (i.e. full size 12gauge). I'm looking for bigger more powerful ammo. The best 200 yard performing ammo, I've used is the Brenneke Black Magic 3" magnum - 600gr 73cal slugs. I can't seem to find anything better... unless I downsize to Sabots... For 100 yard performance, any/old rifled slug will do, though I've noted over 100 yards, is difficult with 2 3/4" slugs, as they just dont have the BC to keep going... I've noted the new Horady SSTs sabots claim great performance, to roughly 300 yards... Anyone have any experience with them? -M3 |

its a shotgun, not a rifle. full size slugs are a 75-100 yard ammo. sabots to 125yards maybe. i wouldnt go beyond that. either accuracy drops off, or the bullet goes too slow (in the case of the sabots) to not expand and produce poor on game performance.
i suggest, either get closer to your game (within 100 yards) or buy a rifle. |

Technically speaking, it's a slug gun. A shotgun with a fully rifled barrel, and high magnification optic.

Winchester Supreme Partition Gold 2 3/4 sabot. Set it for 2 in high at 100 yrds and its will be about an inch low at 200. I have shot a deer at 176 yrds w/ this load and it dropped on the spot. Range was checked with a laser range finder.
The gub is an 1100 w/ a Nikon 3x9. It has a hastings fully rifled barrel and a Monte Carlo stock. I would take a shot to 200 yrds with no hesitation. Getting to 250 would be a reach. I have practiced enough to do it, but it is a long way. I usually don't hunt in places when I can see that far anyways. |

2" high at 100 results in an inch low at 200yards?
You may need to check your zero again, that is just a bit flatter than the factory says it can shoot... Any slug gun, either with traditional foster style or newer sabot rounds is running out of steam and falling fast past 125-150 yards. It sounds like you need a rifle for your intended game and distance.
