Alright!

Today is day one of year one of New York's limited "Deer Management Focus Area" hunting season.

In other words, a zone of land on which to kill every possible antlerless deer.

2 per day, every day from now to Jan 31.

I'm Encore handgun hunting, otherwise I'd have one already. Had 200 yard oppurtunity walking in.

Now I'm sitting in the edge of the same field, about 150 to one opposite corner, 200 the other.

Encore Pro Hunter handgun in 7mm-08 with Stoney Point sticks.

Here I am:

Well darn.

Just missed (apparently) a nice doe. Odd. Felt like a decent shot. There's some snow on the ground though and I tracked her at least 100 yards in the brush plus 100 or so from where she stood in the field and no blood.

Bummer.

Sorry, no post shot picture...

I shot again but missed.

Sighted the Encore in before the season and was shooting about 1 1/2 high at 100. Both shots tonight felt decent and were ranged at 135 and 145. Second shot was rock solid rest on Stoney Point sticks AND braced on a tree.

My uncle shot two though. So we've got some meat.

Don't know. Hopefully I'll get a chance to verify it in a few days.

You need to get back to the range and practice before someone gets hurt....feelings!

Got to get it figured out for sure. Under the circumstances, those shots were both very makeable. The gun (and me behind it) shoots 2 inches or so at 100. Last time at the range I hit a (fairly large) apple at 45-ish yards, off hand.
Right now, I suspect the scope got knocked. I don't know how but replaying the shots in my mind I can't imagine why I would have missed.
Maybe I'll just find out that I screwed up. Don't know.

Not really a "can", quart jars, cooked and sealed. Why not freeze it? Freezers require power. Any significant time without power and its all garbage.

There are many recipes. You can brown it first or not, add whatever spices or flavored you want, stuff it in jars, pressure cook it for appropriate time and Viola!, you're done.

Well, my uncle and I are sitting in the same spot tonight... this time with two muzzleloaders (one a 200+ yard capable Savage ML-10II) and a sabot shotgun good for 150 at least.

Naturally, probably won't see a thing...

Well, it's not all good...

I took the first shot with the ML-10. Steady shot, quartering toward me, 135 yards. Obvious hit, the doe ran about 25 yards straight away and bedded down within seconds. While I switched to the other muzzleloader, my uncle picked one of the others (group of 5) and fired a shot from the 12ga. 3 of them, including the one he shot ran about 50 yards south, where his deer tipped over, while the 5th ran and stopped broadside near where the first one I had shot was laying. I lined up and took the shot. Another obvious hit, it dove into the brush... and the first deer jumped up and dove into the brush about 30 yards south of the second one.

The second deer of mine, 150 yard rushed shot from awkward position (even hit my nose with the scope), lay dead 30 yards in the brush.
The first shot, taken from a good position at a closer deer with a more accurate gun, tracked her through 200 yards of very thick brush and lost the trail.

Such is hunting.

I had one remaining round from the batch I used when I missed the two yesterday. I verified it today.... 100 yards, improvised rest, 1" left and 1/4" low. Remembering where the crosshairs were on the 150 yard shot, I can see why I might have missed low. The first one though, seems like it should have been good. Can't explain that one. Ah well, the two misses are preferable to the wounded one.
