optic for shotgun

I'm going to order a Remington 870 shurshot super slug gun soon...i like the fact it has a pinned barrel and is fully rifled.
I'm planning on using it as a hog gun for inside 100 yds...I hunt in some semi open to really brushy areas at times. I want an optic that will allow for very quick target sighting. Probably rare but if I'm in heavy brush and a hog charges I want to get on him quickly.
Eotech or aimpoint ? low power scope?
Would need to be able to handle the recoil of a slug gun also....

A lot of it depends on your budget and preferences.
There has been some previous TFL discussions on pinning 870's barrels for improved accuracy. I've not seen a new model, with the factory pinning. When you get your gun, please give us a report on the barrel rigidity, and pics of the pinning method.

Not trying to be funny here but I cannot think of anythng faster than a front bead at close quarters.

Take a hard look at the Eotech, the U.S. Marines use it in the sand box. Very rugged and the circle/dot combination is very easy to pickup when targeting a running hog.

A 870 with rifled/pinned barrel should do less then 2 inches at 100 yards, so go with the better sights.

I don't think that set up comes with a front bead!

Looked at it on Remington web site, outstanding gun, one inch barrel pinned solid to the reciever, great set up.

i need more than front bead for longer shots also...but need something for close up also.....but i understand and agree with your input if i was gonna be up close only

Whats nice about the Eotech is the circle is 65 min of angle. So at 100 yds. it covers about 65 inches. Good as a range finder.

I've taken 4 day shotgun courses using a bead front sight, ghost ring sights, and with an EOTech.

While it is just my opinion, the EOTech was head shoulders above the other two alternatives. Granted, I was shooting anything flying....but since pigs don't fly either, I'm thinking the OP doesn't have to worry about either.

The EOTech works great for closeup shooting....the 65 MOA circle seems to hang out there off the end of your barrel....multiple target engagement is quick and solid. At 100 yds, the 1 MOA dot gives you a great sight picture.

My FNH SLP MK1 with an EOTech on it.....

I have a Leupold 1 x 4 on my 870 for deer hunting. It is always set at 1; if I have the time and the need for more magnification, I increase the power. It has been excellent: at least 2 whitetails at more than 100 yards, and several at ranges from 10 to 100 yards. With no hog hunting experience, I cannot say if this is the best optionn for you.

I use a 2x Aimpoint 9000SC (http://www.aimpoint.com/us/products/...id=524&damcat=) on my 930 and it is pretty awesome. Basically, it functions just like a Comp but with 2x Magnification. It is discontinued but there may be 1 or 2 still new NIB out there. Also, there is always the used market.

I've had mine for at least 5 years now and intentionally left it on for the last month (original battery btw) and it is still good to go. I went and checked it midway through typing this. And this wouldn't be the first time I've left it on for extended periods.

Burris SpeedBead. Smallest thing going, and Burris is no slouch when it comes to optics. Mounts at the rear of the receiver, and when you throw up the gun you can't miss the red dot. I have been shooting one on my 1100 for about a month now. Really like it. I had a Weaver Qwik-Point years ago, and it worked well when it worked, but it was bulky and heavy and I had endless mount issues. This thing addressed all the issues. I shoot flying targets with mine.

The EOTechs or any type of RedDot types, is definitely faster, that is on a slug barrel. I have installed quite a few for folks and they swear by them. Not only that, but these dot sights will give you additional advantages over open sights and powered scopes. Got to go there to fully appreciate them. ....

if you want to go with a traditional scope i really like the nikon prostaff 2-7 worked very well on my dads slug gun held zero from day one til he sold it 8 years later

Been running a Simmons Deerfield 2X scope on my Win 1200 for nearly 15 years and it is my go to gun for turkey, and yard varmints like feral cats and skunks. It's also my back up deer gun for up to 100 yards. I oractice reguylarly with it and it has never gone off zero and never let me down. Just my dos centavos but anything with long eye relief and between 1.5X to 3X will work if you go glass. Gotta love the simplicity of fixed power for shotguns.

Eaotech's are always the way to go if the pocket can afford it...if not, Burris makes a fine product IMO and the speedbead works very well for my uses and can be found between the $230-$260 in my area.
