Glock G36 .45ACP Sub Or Not?
Ok, this is not earth shattering, but on many threads when a G36 is mentioned someone will chime in and say it's not really sub compact, then they will use a G26 or G27 as comparison. But considering the G36 is .45ACP, then I think it does fit the sub category. Anyway, I can carry my G36 CCW as easily as my Smith 36, so I don't care it it's sub or not.
So, what are the real (not 9mm/.40 S&W) apples to apples any brand comparisons for a .45ACP that holds 6+1 and is easy to conceal? |

Glock 45 caliber, as you may know, come is the
G21 a full size G30 labelled subcompact but is almost the same size as other Glock compacts G36 same as the G30 only slimmer (single stack) Glock calls it a subcompact, but to many Glock owners it is not. The G39 is the only Glock subcompact in a 45 caliber. Too bad it's a GAP |

It's sad that the .45 GAP is not catching on as well as it could have. It seems like a fantastic round design, but I won't buy one out of fear that it'll be discontinued in a few years.

I dunno, it sure seems pretty subcompact to me. It was the first handgun I ever owned that I could have on me and nearly forget that it was there.
I don't carry it as much these days as I prefer a revolver, but it's a joy to pack and shoot. I too wish GAP would have caught on a bit more. Seems like a neat way to cram more .45 into a design. However, in a pinch, ammo is just too tough to come by....locally i mean. |

DoughMan is a hard core Glock/GAP shooter
The G36/G30 is much closer to the dimensions of the "compact" Glock rather than a "subcompact" that Glock labels it. Great guns. Dumb ass company. |

I can agree the 36 may not be a sub, but it appears to be one of the most compact of the .45's out there. But sub is still relative. Maybe for a .45ACP the Glock is sub? But then that's were I started.

I don't worry if it's called a compact or subcompact. It's about the same size of an officers size colt. It's a subcompact for a 45acp as far as I'm concerned. It fits the holsters of a G-19 and that's listed as a compact.
So G-19 compact but as the 45acp is a larger round G-36 subcompact.

Los, good post. Numbers don't lie, I agree the Kahr is more compact than the G36.

Lastly, Los for giggles do one of your charts comparing a Glock 36 and 26/27/33/39...even though the 39 will have a slightly wider slide.

The 30 and 36 are marginally bigger than the 26.
The 30 and 36 are ever so slightly longer. |

whats your definition of marginal? To me they're significantly bigger. Show the stock mag of the 36 and 26, just don't show the frame's of the two. Also the width of the 2 are way different.

I got home a little late ,..and tired, so I quickly whipped up a chart in draft form just to illustrate the size comparison between a G36 and a G26. Not fancy, but you get the picture.
One thing I noticed after scaling the images was that the G36 and G26 frames are virtually identical, except that the G36 frame is longer. |

Having carried both, I feel that the difference is marginal. The 36 is also .05" slimmer than the 26. |

Los,
again that's good info, but I still keep in mind that the 26 is 9mm, so the 36 being .45ACP is not that much bigger. Having said that, a 26 is on my to get list. |

Yup. Plus you get standard capacity of [10+1 with the G26], as opposed to [6+1 with the G36].
FYI, a G30 with a 9-round (flat base) compact magazine will be just a tad taller [0.28"] than a G26 with a standard (flat base)10 round magazine. Additionally, the G30 is only 0.09" thicker than a G26. Last edited by los; February 10, 2011 at 10:20 AM. |
