They called in SWAT with their night vision scopes .Most animals were shot during the first night . I assume 5.56 and 7.62.

more than likely they were using what just about any police dept in America uses: ar15s and probably either a 30-06 or 308 sniper rifle

I didnt watch the news much after the first reports .Later reports talk of 'assault' rifles, but This is one of the reports that I saw:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-15364027
Quote:
Sheriff's Deputy Jonathan Merry was one of the first to respond to the incident.

Mr Hanna said the scope of the event was immense.

"This is like Noah's Ark wrecking here in Zanesville," he said.

He shot a gray wolf and a black bear, firing his pistol as the bear charged at him. The policeman said the bear was about 7ft (2m) away when he killed it with a single round

lions and tigers and bears! oh my!

swat teams, night vision and machine guns? nice fantasy, but keep dreaming. slug guns and side arms is what they used. i live about 45 minutes away from zanesville and its the only thing our local news is talking about. jack hanna was called in as a consultant, and he advised against tranqs, stating that if they were actually lucky enough to get a good shot on one, in the meat, that the animal would still run off too far and disappear before it went down, and they wouldn't find it anyone before nightfall anyway. they did try to tranq one of the big cats but it just ****** it off and charged them. it was put down w/ their handguns. in the end they had all the animals accounted for, minus one monkey w/ herpes. they later found it in one of the big cats bellies.

truly tragic story. what a loss. there are only like 1000 of those tigers left in the world, and they had to put down 20 of them.
