Should I get mossberg 500 or 590

I'm getting ready to buy my first gun and I've wanted the mossberg 590 for a while, but I don't know if thats really what I need. I mostly shoot clays and every once in a while go pheasent hunting, but I would also like it to be good for home defense and nice to look at.I've heard that the 590's barrel is pretty much fixed and that the 500's is easily changed so it's probably better for hunting. Also the 590 has dissapeared after election day, and there are 2 500's that I could buy if I wanted to on in a couple days. So long story short should I wait to get a 590 (which I like but might not be as usefull all around) or settle for the 500? Or am I just over thinking the whole thing?

If the 590 is a 5+1 then it is the same barrels as the 500's. If it is the 7-8+1 then it is a pink elephant as far as barrel variety.
So if it is more than 5+1 I would have to go regular 500. You can buy 590 guts and make a 500 into a 590.

I'd go with the 500. Clean, simple, gads of aftermarket parts and accessories.

For me, I wanted a reliable and durable shotgun with 7 sht mag tube. I also wanted a bead sightand matte finish. I found it in the Mossberg 500 Persuader.

thanks guys for all the input, I think I'll probably get one of the 500's thats coming on tuesday. Cause this gun will be more of an all around for the time being and I'd like to be able to swap barrels easily. Just one more question, how much more durable is the matte finish than the regular one?

P.S. Creature,That 590A1 looks sick with a wooden stock!

While I cannot vouch for either in a wet duck boat season after season... My blued 500 is over 18 years old and looks plenty nice still...
with low grade redneck maintenance mind you.

I got the 590 and am very happy with it. as I am sure these guys will advise, it's less versatile than other choices.

The mossberg 500 and 590s take different barrels that are not interchangeable. Look closely at the way the barrels mount to the mag tube. The 500s use a nut that screws into the end of the mag tube. The 590s use a magazine cap that screws onto the mag tube (like the remington 870).

A 500 with the short 5 shot mag tube can swap barrels easily between the 18.5 inch barrel, the turkey barrels, longer hunting barrels etc without any problem.

The model 500 cruiser or persuader models that have a 20 inch barrel and the 7 shot mag tube do not accept the standard sporting type barrels.

The 590 barrels don't come in as many variations. You can get an 18.5 inch version on the 590A1 with the 5 shot mag or the 7 shot with the 20 inch barrel. You can use mag extensions on the 590s

The basic differences between the 500 and 590 aren't that great other than what is listed above. The 590A1 is a mil spec 590 with a heavier barrel, a metal trigger group (plastic on the 500 and 590), parkerized finish and a metal safety (plastic on the 500 and 590)

The new model 500 breecher models that have PG only rear stock and a breecher barrel appear to use the same mounting system as the 590s.

All that being said, I have a 590A1 18.5inch and a 500 with 18.5 inch barrels, both with bead sights. I use them for skeet, fun and for on duty LEO use. Overall, even though the 590A1 is a little more rugged (in theory), I have never had a problem with either and find the 500 feels handier due to lighter weight. The 500s also sell for a fair bit less money than the 590s.

My vote goes for the 500 with the short mag tube to permit easy barrel swapping. You will be limited to 5 shots in the mag with no provision to use a mag extension....but that should be plenty to get the job done. Good luck.
