480 Ruger

Cast a few boolits for this giant today. Makes my wrist hurt to look at them. Who among you shoot these beast?

These weigh 412 grains ready to go.

To compare size, on the left a 310 grain 44.

First off... beautiful!

Second... just why.

Don't get me sideways. I have 2 super black hawks and a super red in 44 mag. I've seen nothing but maybe a grizzly that can walk away from a 240 gn laser cast SWC. I also load 900 gn'ers in my 62 cal muzzleloaders. So again why?

I've fired a 475 Linebaugh on several occasions but never a 480. I would think the SRH would be a better platform for me. Alas I can't picture me with anything like this. It is a nice lookin' boolit though.

I've got a SRH 7 1/2 in .480 - was just out shooting it yesterday with some 400 grain monsters that I cast up a while back.

No bears here in Vegas - just got a good deal on it from a guy on our local forum about a year ago and have had tons of fun with it. It wouldn't make sense if I didn't cast, but at about .10 cents a shot, why not!

Ahhhh 480 why do I love thee? Let me count the ways
1) its a big bore revolver (I cant explain it any better than that)
2) recoil from this gun is less than some 44s I've shot, which means I could shoot it all day
3) I don't black out for a minute when I see the price of store bought ammo. Its about a dollar a shot. Same as my 06.
4) I can pursue and kill anything in North America with this gun. I know there are "better" choices but I'm not going to debate that now. I can do it with the one I have.
5) Last but not least was the price. I got a really good deal on it.

Now THAT is a bullet no two ways about it. I find that the Lee .452-300 RF out of my 454, is plenty of lead for anything I plan to hunt. I don't even load it to top end and it still rocks.

I totally understand the "BIG" bore attraction as well, but I have to have a use for what I put in the safe, and unless the hogs here get a LOT bigger, or a LOT tougher, I simply can't justify anything bigger than what I already have.

I would love to load a few of those in my Wildey Magnum. Looks like I am going to have to not only find brass, but a mold as well.

Darn it looks like more money spent before it ever hits my hands.

44-310-K, crimp to meplat, .470"............20 cents.

475-410-K, crimp to meplat, .450"..........25 cents.

They should.
They would only be 0.085" over SAAMI max length, if seated exactly to the edge of the crimp groove in max-length brass.

Lee makes a 400 grain mold with two crimp grooves. Coincidentally, when seated out in the lower crimp groove, case capacity is the same as the .475 Linebaugh.

I'm not telling YOU to do this, but I have used the same load in my .480 as in my .475 when using this bullet. There isn't much room left at the end of the cylinder, but it does fit and the revolver will take the standard SAAMI pressure of the .475 Linebaugh, as they aren't that far apart; 48,000 for the .480 and 50,000 for the .475.

My first .480 was early enough that the first box of ammo I bought was head stamped .475 Ruger. I've never seen any others.

I like it! How would you compare the recoil with say, a 7-1/2" SBH?

I was close to buying a SRH in 480 Ruger, but the guy behind the counter talked me out of it. Said the recoil is brutal. Got the SBH instead-which I'm happy with.
