Will a 1:12 stabilize a 30 cal Barnes TSX?
Will a 1:12 stabilize a 30 cal Barnes TSX? I am buying a .308 for elk season next year and have been looking at a Weatherby Vanguard. I'm wondering if a 168 or 180 grn Barnes TSX will stabilize with the Vanguards 1:12 twist, or even the 180gn Nosler Partition. Should I stick with something in a 1:10 twist? If that is the case, I will probably look at Savage's. I want something cheap, accurate and something I won't be afraid to beat the brush with.

Whether or not a given twist rate will stabilize a bullet depends on bullet geometry, weight, and velocity. IIRC, the 180gr Barnes TSX is about 1.4" long, and plugging the numbers into the calculator, a 1:12 twist might be marginal for 180gr but would work well for 165gr.

According to the Lilja website, 1:12 will stabilize either bullet. The twist/weight chart is the 2nd chart on the page.

my remington 700 has a 1:10 twist and it doesn't shoot 180gr well at all but shoots 130 & 150 grain really well
