My Great Plains Rifle Arrived (Pictures)

Just wanted to thank everyone for their helpful comments in the thread I started to help me decide on my first BP rifle.

The .50 cal Lyman Great Plains Rifle I won on Gunbroker arrived today. It was in much better condition than I was expecting for $317.70.

Very, Very Nice! Start with a .490 round ball .020 thick patching. Use
the old Blue & white stripe pillow ticking, and 70 grs Goex FFF Black Powder
and you will be happy.

Rifle will privide you with many years of enjoyment.

Remember, shooting different loads to find the rifle's "sweetspot" is half the enjoyment.

IMO, $317 is decent money for a GPR - CONGRATS !

The GPR's two forend tenons and blackened furniture are very much more in line with the original J&S Hawken rifles than most "Hawken" clones made.

Is it a 1:66 round ball rifle, or a 1:28 conical shooter ?

(Then again, it could be a 1:48 compromise twist - sometimes the barrels are stamped with the twist)

The barrel is 1:66 twist. That was one of the deciding factors for buying this one. I don't hunt; and the maximum distance at my range is 100 yards, so I have no need to shoot anything other than ball.

I had the balls, powder, and patches in hand before the rifle arrived. Balls are .490, patches are Cabelas .020, and the propellant is Triple 7 FFG. I will have to do some conversion math for the Triple 7. I also have some Triple 7 FFFG that I can try.

You will enjoy that rifle.
I shoot a .50 Lyman Trade Rifle and it's a tack driver. very similar to yours except barrel length. The hooked breach makes them very easy to clean.
Mine lives on .490 balls, .015 wonderlube patches and 60 gr. Goex 3F for club target shooting.

Great Plains Rifle is 1:66
Great Plains Hunter is 1:28

The Lyman is one of the best, if not THE best, deal for a factory sidelock on the market today. I have two .54 cal Great Plains Rifles, one percussion and one flintlock, and they are both very accurate and enjoyable to shoot.
