Mod 98 1940 production

I have a Mod 98, 1940's production with a manufacture number of 42 on the top of the receiver. The SN is 2665. The left side of the barrel has the three "655" Eagle marks. Above them is what looks like a leaf or antler design.
Has anyone seen that type of marking before?

Your rifle is a 1940 dated Mauser Oberndorf rifle. The "42" and "WaA 655" are codes for the Mauser Oberndorf plant during that time frame. I'm not sure on the other marking that you mentioned. Could you post a picture of it?

AFAIK, a German proofmark, that looks like the single side of an Elk antler, denotes passage through the Ulm proofhouse after 1952, for whatever reason.
