NRA Service Rifle will work you out but a lot of the Video Game Generation find it dull.

There are some tackytickle rifle shoots but most are incorporated into three-gun where you also shoot pistol and shotgun.

ar type shooting?

I know of a guy who shoots multi-gun, and "f-class" type stuff...
What are you looking to shot exactly?

Check out the link to my videos below. I shoot mainly USPSA pistol and 3 gun. I dabble in IDPA, steel challenge and ICORE.

Action shooting is so much fun because it blends speed accuracy and movement.

Let me know if you have any questions about any of the aforementioned sports.

West Michigan. Well, I just shot a 200 yd NRA highpower this morning in Kalamazoo. My daughter shot with me, bypassing the IDPA match that was going on in Dorr. Yesterday some of my buddies went down to Fort Wayne for a CMP Springfield and Garand match. I'll be shooting a CMP match in Kalamazoo and another in Muskegon in September. Kalamazoo Rod and Gun shoots Action Pistol every Thurday night. Southern Michigan shoots steel plates just about every week.

Whereabouts in West Michigan and what are you looking to shoot? Rifle (service, vintage, match)? Pistol (USPSA, IPSC, Bullseye) ? Trap (5 stand, skeet, Sporting Clays)? It's all here.

I'm near Kalamazoo and I can shoot some sort of match, from friendly to serious national competition, within a reasonable driving distance pretty much every week all summer long.

Here's some clubs with pretty full event calendars:

http://www.muskegonprc.org/

There are more, these are just the ones where I usually shoot.

Get a RockRiver Match and do some high power, shot it for seven years. One year with a 1903A, the next with a Grand, then I when Black and had a blast. Only reason I stopped was because my hip replacement kept popping out of socket. Great bunch of people to be around and spend the day with.

You can find a lot of links to ranges at www.mcrgo.org.

They are listed under, "Places To Shoot" on the right side of the homepage.
Check out ranges in your county and neighboring ones and you'll have a pretty good idea of what you can shoot and when you can do it.

I just discovered steel challenge and it's a hoot,,,

Centerfire pistol or revolver competition shooting.

They also have a .22 rimfire division,,,
It doesn't cost a fortune to gear up and compete,,,
I would say half of the people I met were shooting 3-400 dollar Rugers.

I have a blast with and am not embarrassed shooting a Basic Ruger 22/45,,,
You will need several (5 is recommended) magazines,,,
You shoot each stage 5 times (they call it 5 strings),,,
You add the time for the best 4 strings,,,
That's your score for that stage

Each set of targets is a "stage",,,
All of the stages are standardized,,,
The place I go to has 6-8 stages per match.

Basically, you stand in a square,,,
You shoot 5-6 targets from about 15 to 25 yards,,,
You are timed and that (plus time for misses) is your score.

BTW, be prepared to be humiliated by 11 and 12 year old girls,,,
There are two sisters (11 & 13 I think) who I want on my side in a gunfight.

Here is their website.

This is from their website:
Quote:
Steel Challenge scoring is simple: your time is your score. There are five targets, commonly referred to as plates. Four are primary plates, and the fifth is designated as the stop plate. Each of the primary targets must be hit at least once during each string of fire, followed by the stop plate, which must be hit last to stop the time. Competitors may fire as many rounds as they deem necessary for each string of fire. The best four out of five strings will be counted as the total score for each stage, except for Outer Limits, which will be the best three out of four runs. Total score for all stages will determine the order of finish for final standings.
Oops! Sorry man,,,
After I typed all this I noticed you specifically said AR competition.

Mich. seems to be big into CMP Games, (meaning Vintage rifle shooting). To go along with the competition they have clinics to get new shooters started.

By Vintage rilfe I mean surplus military rifles, Garand, Carbines, Springfields, and other Vintage Military rifles. They are also big in Small Bore Sporter shooting.

These matches are probably the cheapest way to get involved in shooting sports. Not to mention a lot of fun.

Go here and search for clinics and matches in your area.
