Savage 93 .17hmr

have the savage 93r-17f and noticed the other day at the range that the casings were splitting around the neck of the case( this would be the neck or shoulder before it necks down the the bullet). usually dont pick them up but that day was different. called savage and they said send the gun back, which i did and also called cci which was the ammo and talked to a gentleman and sent him a coulple of the split casings. i am waiting on the results but my question is has anyone else noticed this happening? love the gun and new cartridge but having a garand look out for split cartridges. thanks

yes

This has been a common occurance for folks with the 17HMR. I would think that they would be able to solve the problem by now. On most bolt action rifles, folks haven't worried too much about it, but for those of us with semi-autos, it has been coming up more often. I have found many ballooned necks on empties and have had one or two crack just like you found. I am not sure if it is the ammo's fault or the chamber of the rifle's. Cheif Dave on RFC has found a solution to the problem for his rifles. He put in a little more freebore which has solved two problems. One, it allowed the use of a 22 mag to change to the 17hmr and feed without problems as well as the empties seem to not balloon or crack. It seems the freebore allows the pressure curve to level off better than the original chamber does. I would be intersted in hearing what Savage does to help solve the problem as well as hearing from CCI.
