Best 1911 for 600 or under
Looking around to find me a 1911. I really want a mid size but not sure what brands have the best rep and trying to stay under 600 if at all possible. Any advice?

MetroArms American Classic is my suggestion:
http://www.metroarms.com/ Reliable, accurate, affordable and fun to shoot, what more do need? |

Rock Island/Armscor or Springfield are good bang for the buck for well under $600. I think the Taurus is close to that $600 mark. All three good choices. Dont know much about the Metro but Ive never heard anything bad about them.

Para Ordnance GI Expert can be had for around there.
Ruger SR1911 was about that, maybe $650 but good luck finding that. What is Sig's cheapest 1911 run? I'd consider Sig too if they have one in your price range. The Remington R1 is hovering in the $600 area as well. |

Wasn't the STI Spartan considered a good one?

Another vote for Rock Island. Its not the prettiest but it will feed anything you put in it right out of the box.

MetroArms American Classic is a nice peice. Comes with nicer sights than the Rock Island. I bought the Taurus Pt1911 in 9mm for my Dad. He loves it. I would vote for the Taurus. Right at $600 has about everything you would ever want in a 1911. Number 2 would be the Metro.

+1 for the remington R1,,,revently purchased the GI model for 610 OTD new in box,,,great fit no play at all in slide to frame fit, cycles smooth, nice finish, great shooter, ate all 400 rounds of ammo ive used so far ( speer gold dots, hornday defense, federal, and winchester),,, all american made,,,i have 2 other 1911's that cost me under 1k and IMHO the remingtion R1 is the best value

Whatever you purchase check it out before putting money down. I just purchased a new 1911 and there a small flaw that I could live with. The clerk told me that the companies are running 24/7 and they just had to return a bunch of (brand X) pistols because the slides were sloppy and not fitted properly.

I have a crazy question. I am also looking for a .45 cal.
Do you think it would be a bad idea to trade a S&W M&P .40 cal to get a "cheap" .45 cal? It's a full size M&P with three hi-cap mags (15rds) and a BlackHawk CQC holster. I am on the fence but I also only have my trade to pay for a new gun. So, keep the forty or ditch it for a Rock Island .45? I am sorry for high jacking the thread! |

Either of them are viable choices but the M&P brings roughly twice as much total firepower. The way I see it, the ODDS that I (living in an ordinary neighborhood in an ordinary city, doing ordinary things) will ever need more than 8 shots fired in an SD scenario ARE TINY. Statistically, most gun exchanges consist of 3 or less total shots fired. It's highly unlikely that a non-Leo ordinary citizen will ever be involved in a high-round-count gun "battle". The (all-steel) 1911 will be heavier than the (some-polymer) M&P... but thinner. 1911's have so much going for them generally but I'm personally not a big fan of carrying cocked-and-locked (1911 style) so that's a factor for me. An M&P .40 Compact (10+1) would work better for me as a carry but it's your choice...

Don't count out the Auto Ordnance 1911. People like to bash them but I think public opinion is coming around. I absolutely love mine. I won't lie I did have issues with it but it wasn't the manufacturers fault, it was where I bought it from. They were selling used range rentals as new, didn't realize it till I got it home. Sent it in, was shipped a brand new pistol and couldn't be happier. Try to take a look at an AO before you buy and see what you think, just be careful where you buy from, especially now, with the current market.
That goes for any model you decide to look at. Turns out the LGS I'm talking about was doing it with a lot of different models, not just AOs. Lesson learned, now When I shop, I ask the clerk to do a field strip. There are some unscrupulous people out there just waiting to take advantage. |

Hey! Ruger just released the new SR.45 caliber handgun. It is the same as the SR9/SR40 in looks and function.
Nice thing is that it holds 10 + 1 in a package that has a slim profile grip! ImageUploadedByTapatalk1358403530.220087.jpg You can't beat the price! The .40 cal SR40 runs right about the $400 dollar mark (even though suggested retail is like $529(?) so I assume the new .45 should cost about the same. I had the SR40 and it was a very nice gun! I unfortunately decided to trade it in on the S&W M&P 40, another nice gun. |
