.452 45 auto bullets in 45-70

Has anyone here ever tried this, I don't want a lecture, I probably will try it tonight or tomorrow, the bullets I have been loading measure .454, the 230 grain 45 acp bullets measure .452. I have been loading for over 20 years and I know what I am doing so I am not looking for approval just some ideas if anyone has done it. I plan on loading down from the 300 grain bullet info, I know I can acheive velocity too high for the 230's, but plan on running them around 1900 to 2200, depending on accuracy. I think this will lower the amount recoil, I shoot these through a Contender 16 inch, and it could be a very good deer load.

The bullets will be too loose in the bore, so they may not stabilize properly, or you may get a lot of leading due to blow-by. It won't hurt anything to try it tho'.

Let's look at it this way: .452" bullets flopping up a .458" bore....

You will be able to hit the backstop for sure, assuming it is a fairly large mountain.

They might could be paper-patched (probably too *big* for that)

They probably won't shoot much different than the .454 bullets you're using now. But there may not be enough neck tension to hold the bullet in place for you to crimp. A .459 - .460 cast bullet should work better than either.

How is the neck tension with the .454" bullets?

They're also a tad light...

What's the rate of twist in your .45-70 Contender?

It won't work! Just take our word for it, don't even try it.

I just fl sized a starline nickle 45/70 case. Inside diameter is .448, plenty snug to hold a .452 bullet, which it did! But now what about the miss-match of the .452 bullet in a .458 barrel? No way is that small bullet going to work.

In order for a bullet to work in a firearm, 3 things have the happen. The bore must be completely sealed by the bullet, the bullet has to grip the rifling, and a proper powder charge has to have resistance to get burning completely. No complete seal by a too small bullet, no resistance, no powder burn, no velocity. Bullet not fitting the bore, no spin, so no stabilization, no accuracy.

Get the proper size bullets, and quit trying to cheap out!

Too small in diameter. The .45 ACP uses a .451 or .452 inch bullet. The .45-70 uses a .458" bullet. Your .454" bullets are too small too.

452/458

The only way I was able to get .45 ACP 230s to work was to swage them up to .458. Accuracy was iffy.

A couple of years ago I accidently fired some 44 Mags in my Ruger 45 LC. I couldn't figure out why I was missing a gallon jug at no more than 40 feet. I then emptied the gun and saw the cases balloned to one side. No harm done to me or the gun other than to my pride.
I doubt you would find ANY accuracy with the pistol bullets you propose.
