slugging a barrel

Can anyone suggest an easy way to slug a barrel? I want to choose the proper sizing dies for my 38, 357 and 9. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

go back..

Hello: Go back to 6 pages of posts ago - to one thread I started called 7.62X54R - trouble.....

The fellow that answered me had a GREAT answer with pics of how to slug a Nygant, and his ideas and thoughts I think would work for you too - and it will be not only cheap, but repeatable.

Look for the thread there started by me on the 7.62x54R (a royal pain in the neck, by the way.

Good luck and I think it will help you!

God bless.

How to slug a barrel

If you need more information there is a handy little youtube video about it. Its made by ammosmith and most of their videos have been very resourceful and accurate. Heres the link:

hope this helps out.

The main tricks with slugging are to get fairly pure lead alloy and to use an OD thimble micrometer with ten thousandths resolution, and not caliper. Calipers can be off up to a couple of thousandths under some conditions and you would need a way to calibrate it near your intended measuring diameter to use it reliably.

Normal casting alloy is too springy and not only comes out a little large, but doesn't let you feel constrictions very easily because it bears out against the bore the whole way down. Hornady swaged round balls (not their hard ball system) for muzzle loaders work fine. Fishing sinkers, as used in the linked thread, used to be fairly pure lead, but now EPA regs are causing them more often to be made of something harder. Zinc seems to be increasingly common. At least the ones sold in Ohio are made that way.
