Lever action accuracy?

Due to the fact that the forearm on the lever gun is attached to the barrel, is a lever gun "inherently" less accurate than a bolt action?

I have a Model 9422M, .22 Magnum Winchester lever gun and I was wondering what kind of accuracy to expect. At present,I'm not getting great accuracy, but then it has a relatively cheap scope on it.

I would give it a very good cleaning and try a few differant types of ammo and see what happens ,you should be able to get under 2 inches at 50 yards with no problem with just the iron sights alone .

The first time I tried my Rossi 92, I bullseyed the target at 50 yards. So I don't think they have any problem with accuracy if it's a good, clean gun with the barrel grooves in good shape, using decent ammo.

The only lever gun I owned was a 94 winny with a 16" trapper barrel. Using 125 gr. Sierra Hp's and a williams receiver sight I could shoot 1" groups @100 yards in good light. I don't know if that helps since you are thinkin about a rimfire.

I would say that any of the lever guns I've shot, rimfire or centerfire, were all accurate enough for general shooting/hunting at ranges that they are intended for. What more do you need?

I've found Lever Action rifles to be very accurate. Some even outshoot some of my bolt guns.

Marlin 1894 44 Mag, 240gr / max load of 2400

Marlin 39A, 50 yards, Bulk Federal 22lr ammo

My Bro-in-law has a Winchester 1894 that shoots the Remington Corelokts sub 1" regularly at 100 yards.

None of my autos can do this. Of my bolts, only a CZ 452 and a Remington 700 in 30-06 can better these groups. Neither is as much fun to hunt with.

My BL22 is a tack driver and so are my Winchester 94 & 95 rifles. I wouldn't expect any less from a 9422, Might be worth a trip to a good gunsmith - things like some damage to the crown of the barrel can do bad things for accuracy.

Might help to know too if the scope that's on it is a centerfire scope. If it is you won't get great accuracy out of it because of the paralax setting on a centerfire, it's usually set around 150 yds I think. Way more than neccessary on a rimfire.

To answer your question, yes. The bolt gun is on average a more accurate rifle.

This is not saying that the lever is not accurate. Heck my Marlin 1895M (.450) shoots almost as well as my Savage .30-06. It shoots 1.5 MOA at 100 yards with factory ammo.

The lever action rifle was never made to be a tack driver, but rather a meat for the pot/self defence implement.Never clean the bore on a 22 RF,chamber yes.
