12g shell from .50BMG case?
I was recently told that you can make a 12g shotshell from a .50BMG casing. They said to peen the front of the rim to thin it out to about the right thickness, then file it to the correct diameter. Also, cut the case off about a quarter inch behind the neck. Prime, load the powder charge, use felt wads like in a muzzle loading shotty, load the shot or whatever projectile you're using, and fill the end with parafin wax. Seems to be workable, case head's the right size, but I don't have the brass to try it. Has anyone else here tried this? By the way, yes, I do realize this is almost completely pointless, due to cost, but it has one heck of a curiosity factor.

I'm not sure why I would even consider it.

Lots of work, when you can buy brass 12ga hulls from Midway, also can buy brass 20ga hulls IIRC. .444 Marlin brass make good .410 hulls as well.

An awful lot of work, and expensive. Not much point to it, IMO.

What about the case rim? Isn't the 12 ga. rimmed and the .50BMG rimless?

I dont think so. The .50BMG is neither a strait walled case nor rimmed. Trying this would definatly blow up your gun, since the brass of the case probably wouldnt expand to the walls of the chamber, allowing the gases to escape around it, and most likely blowing the gun apart, assuming you could even get it in the chamber and keep it there.
