What software are you guys running,etc?

All of these questions are not aimed at being nosey to specific's of this site. I just need a few general questions answered. I never have had any experience with this topic so please bare with me. Thank you in advance.

I am trying to convice a friend about starting there own BB about a completely different topic than this one, about model trains. I really like how this site is run and set up so it would only be wise to try model it. No pun intended. What version of the software are you guys running and where did you get it from? Do you host it yourselves or is it on someone else'e machine? How does the licenseing work? If you have a site where you got this software and maybe I could read up myself. I only ask you guys about this becasue it is always better to ask those how have used it than taking a blind stab at it myself.
