Texas CHL processing time?

My CHL application packet just arrived at Austin according to the USPS website. So how long does it*take on average for everything to get processed? I've been hearing from 2 weeks to almost a year if there's complications. Is this right?

Yes, it depends on what county you're from. Its all tied to the background checks. Instead of "welcome to the 1950s" and just checking it against relevant databases like a defense contractor or the military would (or their own database), they send it out to the counties you've noted a residence in. Those counties then (eventually) do a background check.

Some counties are very good, some (mine) can take up to six months more. In my instance I work in another city during the week, and have my driver's license still there, so I went through that county as well, whereas the wife went through a county just north of Austin. Results: she received hers almost four months ahead of mine.

This may have changed. I have to renew mine so I'll find out...

Check the Texas CHL forum for more current information.

I just received mine last week. It was about 5 weeks from mailing in the application to receipt of the CHL.

If I remember correctly it took 3-4 weeks. I remember it arriving faster than I thought it would.

I've lived in Harris county since I've moved to Texas (over 10 years ago) so hopefully the whole process won't be TOO bad.

30-60 days unless you have a problem and that can talk longer. if you do it on line and then do your class it's about 30 days

My three (initial, re-issue due to a move and renewal) have each been less than 60 days.

The Texas CHL Forum is one of the best gun sites around, especially for Texans, in my opinion. The best source for Texas CHL processing info and an excellent source for Texas related gun news. I view the 'Active Topics' at least once a week.

Thank you for the lead to the Texas CHL Forum. I did not know it existed.

Thanks again,

Just as an update for those waiting or about to apply, DPS recieved my package Jan. 28, 2013. I have heard they have been flooded with applications recently. I will let you know when I get it. One issue was I was arrested twice in my 20's but did include all notorized paper work. No arrests were disqualifiers. Stupid kid stuff.

mine arrived oct 18 2012 and i got mine around the same time jan 2013 a full 3 months for me. This was probably due to my fingerprints being "unreadable" thus requiring a manual background check and my 2 misdemeanors which had to be documented and then checked out.

OMG. Just got my CHL today.

It took 46 days. I have heard horror stories about DPS taking months, but I don't think this wait time was that bad.
