i have a mas36 and have wanted a mas49 forever. but all i ever run into is .308 conversions by century.

Another MAS 36 here. Sweet shooting rifle. I would like a 49 but the prices I've seen are way ou there.

I have a 36 and a 49/56. May use the 49 next week for deer hunting, found a nice load with 150 grain ballistic tips that will keep 10 rounds in a quart oil jug at 250 yards.

Great gun, but after trying to find good ammo, slam firing, etc, I traded it for a "old" Ruger Vaquero in 44 mag, stainless with a 7.5 inch barrel. If someone could figure a way to make a 20 or 30 roung mag for it you could sell the hound out of them.

The cost of the scope kept me out of that market, but I will probably regret the trade, but money is tight!

Have bayonet, aiming systems, the night sight, etc going on EBay.

found one at a store for 400$ almost bought it. but it looked brand new. not a scratch or a dent anywhere. the thing looked like it had been made 5 min. ago. is that possible to find one that nice? or had somebody made/bought a new stock and re-parkerized it?

Most of them were re-arsenalled by the French before they were put into long-term storage, and therefore look quite nice.

really? good to know. thank you. i showed it to my dad and he insisted there was know way it could be that nice. even unissued. i said it must of been put in storage bcuz i didnt think that there were enought parts for that gun for sombody to have restocked it. should have bought it i guess. she was beautiful. untouched.

I have a 36 that has been referbed and looks new on the outside. Barrel is dark. Bought it at Cabela's for $175, Nov. '07. I haven't fired it because, until recently, I had another, older one that was "war worn" and shot pretty well.

I also have a 49/56 that I gave $200 for at a pawn shop, in Nov. '05. That was rifle and one mag. I love it! It is my favorite C&R. It was referbed in '56 but still looks great!

I have recently started reloading to feed this puppy. I am interested in any good loads you may have found for it!

It has only slam-fired about 5 times since I have had it. I had it happen twice the last time I went to the range! I know it's soft primers and a sharp firing pin. I WILL file the pin flat before I load more than one round in it. I also noticed that it has never slam-fired on surplus ammo! Just FNM!

Edit: DONE! Ground the point off the firing pin, no more slam fires!

DO NOT FILE THE FIRING PIN. The problem is the weight of the firing pin. Look at an M1 Garand pin, and see what needs to be done. Just some thinning with a dremmel tool, keeping all work going from front to back. No more slam firing.
I invented the conversion for Century, and still own the original gun. Over 2000 rounds with no problems at all. Clean about every 500. An accurate,1/2 inch preformer. I repeat DO NOT FILE THE FIRING PIN FLAT.

I just picked up a MAS 36 with the bayonet and sling for $250

It loves the Privi Partizan ammo and is really pleasant to shoot.

Any source for pre-lightened firing pins?

When I took my MAS to Oleg's house so he could photograph it, he asked if he could take it to the range. "Sure," I said.

"How does it shoot?"

"Don't know. Haven't shot it yet. Remember I only brought the one box of ammo."

He left to go to the range and I stayed at his crib surfing the 'net. He and the other kids came walking back in a few hours later with Oleg's hand all wrapped up and looking like it had been hit with a bat. Yup. Slam-fire. Very first round, and the cocking handle had caught him square on the meaty part of his thumb.

I have a couple of the 49/56 models. Both in .308 and 7.5. The biggest problem with the 7.5 is the ammo. It's hard to get and I've only found it in military ball type, which is a problem if you are gong to hunt with it where I live (FL). If you are going to get a shooter go for the .308 that has been converted properly, much more 'valuable' IMHO

Portuguese FNM commercial ammo isn't screamingly expensive, but they don't exactly sell it at Wally World.
