they were at 910 South Vail Avenue, Montebello, California (CA), 90640.

Found another listing for them in Newport Beach with telephone number of 949-650-4119. Don't know whether it is any good though-give it a try and let us know.

Hello All:

Sorry to say that Safety Speed folded a few years ago. They moved from their location in Montebello, CA to somewhere near the Arizona~Nevada border. After the move, they stayed in business for about a few more years until the original owner passed away.

The owner didn't have anyone to forward the business on to, so when he died, so did the company.

Interesting that this subject just came up. I recently picked up a Safety Speed holster for a 6" K frame. Black basketweave. I have been looking for one for some time now, just as an example of a very unique holster. Mine is the pop open clamshell. I did a little research too, and, apparently, they are long gone.

Its an amazing holster. Heavy as a brick. Now I'm looking for a 6" K38 to put in it. It was a tough sell to the wife..
"You bought that old holster?"
"Yup."
"Do you have agun to fit it?"
"Nope"
"Even for you, does that strike you as a little wierd?"

Such is life....

LOL Sgt. Your not the only guy who has bought a neat holster, and then buy a gun to fit it. I believe those holsters were all the rage among the LAPD way back when. You can still see one worn my Malloy on adam 12 re-runs.

I been looking for one for many many years.. Kudos to you on your find.

There is a steel cover that goes over the back of the trigger guard. (blue arrow) that keeps the gun in the holster.

There is a leather covered button (green arrow) that is inside the exposed trigger guard. When you depress the button, it is attached to a lever that runs along the back of the holster to the latch (red arrow) and moves it out of the way. There is a steel loop on the opposite side of the clamshell. When it releases, there are two coil springs in the back (now middle) of the two holster halves that force it to fly open.

The entire holster is steel, covered both inside and out, with leather.

I hope that makes sense.

Thank you Glenn Dee. I too first saw it on Adam 12. I'll bet I have looked for one for 20 years. Not really actively trying to find one, just a "Gee, I hope I see one of those some day."

It is THE fastest holster I have ever seen. You already have a firing grip on the gun. Your finger is already on the trigger (Hows that for old school?) and, when you push the button, all you do is rotate the gun. There is no "drawing" involved. Its just...there.

I've a sample of a clamshell holster as well. I don't think mine is a Safety Speed, but it is the same design - and also for a 6" K frame. Sgt, yours is in excellent condition. (The history of police holsters is an interesting study in itself, actually.)

Rather quick, and even quicker if one's hand is already on the gun butt. However, that swivel feature will beat one half to death while running, and re-holstering requires both hands.

Drives the 'new' range people nuts, having one's finger in the trigger guard while still in the holster. [insert evil laugh here]
